Nothing better than a calming cat purr but important never to assume a purring cat is a contended cat - we need to listen and look to see the full picture!

Happy #InternationalCatDay! 😻 Our first tip for being cat friendly every day is about how your cat communicates with you and how you can begin to understand a cat’s emotions and behaviours.

Our interactions with cats can influence their emotional state. Their behaviour helps us understand how they are feeling and when we understand the signs, we can make sure we interact in a cat friendly way. Purrfect! 👍

Your cat may ‘tell you’ they want to interact if they…
🐾 Have a high ‘question mark’ tail when approaching
🐾 Are chirruping or trilling
🐾 Are face and body rubbing against you
🐾 Jump on your lap

They don’t want to interact with you if they are…
🐾 Walking or running away or hiding
🐾 Otherwise occupied (e.g playing or eating)
🐾 Suddenly still, tense or crouching
🐾 Swiping, biting, growling or hissing

When they roll over, it’s not an invitation for a belly rub! It’s usually a friendly greeting and a sign your cat is relaxed in your company.

🐈 Think C.A.T to have a cat friendly interaction. Give your cat a CHOICE whether to interact or not, offer them a softly closed hand to sniff and rub. Pay ATTENTION to their body language and give them space if they don’t want to continue. Stick to TOUCHING and petting them in places you know they enjoy.
