Last week we had our ELCAS audit to make sure we were fully compliant with MOD requirements, and I’m really pleased to say it went exceptionally well.

During the audit, the Senior financial Auditor highlighted that SM Safety Training currently holds the highest review percentage of all Health and Safety training companies, with a 99% rating.

We actually lost the 1% because one learner was asked whether they would use the qualification in their current role and answered “maybe”, so I think we can live with that.

For me, this is a great reflection of the work we put into supporting our learners and making sure they receive the right training, guidance and support throughout their course.

A little bit of early Sunday morning admin at work at SM Safety Training 📚☕

This morning I’m preparing course materials ready to be sent out first thing tomorrow, but one of the parts of admin I genuinely enjoy is preparing certificates for our successful NEBOSH General Certificate learners. 🎓👏

There’s something really rewarding about seeing a learner’s name on that certificate, knowing the amount of hard work, study and commitment that has gone into achieving it.

For some, it’s about developing within their current role. For others, particularly our service leavers and veterans, it can be the qualification that helps open the door to a completely new career in Health & Safety.

Every certificate represents another success story, and I’m proud that SM Safety Training has been part of that journey.

You have all put in a huge amount of effort to reach this point. Now it is time to stay calm, trust your knowledge and put everything you have learned into practice.

A few final tips for today:
✅ RTFQ – Read the FULL Question
That is the civilian version because I don’t swear! 😂
Break the question down carefully and make sure you understand exactly what it is asking before you begin writing.

✅ Use the P*E principle
Point – State your technical point clearly.
Example – Link your answer directly to the scenario.
Explain – Add enough detail to show why your point is relevant.

Keep each point focused. Around 20–40 words or two to three lines is normally enough. Avoid overwriting or over-justifying your answers.

✅ Find a quiet place and remove distractions.
✅ Save your work regularly.
✅ Take short breaks to remain fresh and focused.
✅ Start with the questions you feel most confident answering.
✅ Leave enough time to check and upload your work.
✅ Have a backup plan in case your internet connection fails.

Most importantly, remember to upload your answer sheet, not the question paper!

Give yourself a sensible cut-off time tonight, get some rest and wake up slightly earlier tomorrow to read through your answers and make any final adjustments before submitting.

Stay calm, read every question properly and believe in yourself.

1 Day to go for the Open Book exam for NEBOSH General Certificate and NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate.

A quick reminder for everyone preparing for the upcoming NEBOSH Fire Safety Certificate Open Book Examination

There is no official maximum word count for the NEBOSH OBE, but there are some important points to remember.

NEBOSH advises that learners are not normally expected to write more than approximately 3,000 words. In practice, many learners may write between 4,500 and 5,500 words, depending on the questions and the amount of relevant detail included.

Although examiners are not simply counting your words, writing excessively can create unnecessary problems. Submissions exceeding 10,000 words may be referred for possible malpractice. Even when the work is entirely your own, this could delay your result by up to 50 working days while the matter is investigated.

Writing more can give you opportunities to:
✅ Make clear and relevant points
✅ Explain your answers properly
✅ Use information from the scenario to support your response

However, do not include large amounts of information simply in the hope that some of it will gain marks.

Irrelevant information will not earn additional marks and may make it harder for the examiner to identify the strong, mark-worthy points hidden within your answer.

The key message is simple:
Write enough to explain each point clearly, use the scenario wherever possible and remain focused on exactly what the question is asking.
Aim to explain each point in approximately two to three lines, rather than writing long, unfocused paragraphs.

Do not become overly concerned about your final word count. Concentrate on producing answers that are:
✔️ Relevant
✔️ Correct
✔️ Clearly explained
✔️ Linked to the scenario
