Image of the Week

A group of men are seen here laying small paving stones (setts) in the road on the corner of Cross Street/Ashton Lane, Sale, 1900. Setts were small granite or sandstone blocks and were in common use as road building material during the nineteenth century; though by the date of the photograph, many roads were made of water bound macadam.
