A rich, shimmering tenmoku black glaze named after the coat of a black labrado..

Developed from our Mustard Seed which was too unreliable, an addition of 10% iron oxide saved it.
Beautiful with Seamist or Mouldy Crumpet, or Lou White layered over.

Are you feeling frustrated with your glaze results? What's the difference between a paint on glaze, dipped glaze and underglaze? How does temperatures effect glazes and trouble shoot those glaze faults..

This one day workshop, we will discuss the application of glazes and how to achieve the best results from using dipped and pouring glazes. Working with the studio stoneware glazes, we will review the traits of each glaze, what is in glaze, achieving successful layering combinations and how to control the application. There will be time to discuss the purpose and use of oxides, engobes, underglazes and slips and importance of keeping sketchbooks and notes.

There will be time to view the kilns and load a bisque and glaze firing.

Introduction to Wild Clay Course.
We fired the students work to earthenware temp- 1120 and also stoneware- 1250.
Some clays still hold their form and the iron is a rich colour at 1250. The light clay from Hastings beach stays very light and almost creates a glaze sheen on the top. One student brought in black clay from Dorset- it melted to a dark brown puddle.
We also tested tiles with their slip and our glazes to see how slip can be used as decoration.
Last tests coming out this week for test glazes made with their clay, wood ash and also a feldspar.

This course is about experimentation, how to test and where to source clay, understanding of materials, and provenance of materials in our store bought clays and glazes.

Getting ready to turn 5!
We have been reflecting and getting ready to celebrate with you this weekend.
There is of course birthday cake, but also drop in to help us create our birthday "clay cake"- perfect for kids, families or anyone who wants to get their hands in clay.
*Demonstrations and come have a go on the wheel on Saturday- free.

We are whipping up a signature studio cocktail- White Clay Russian. Yep its got clay in it! Plus music, b**r and w**e provided by the Three Legs Brewery.
