It has been a mizzly afternoon here in St Ives today, so here’s a few shots from Wednesday when it was beautiful!
I attended a grass ID workshop with the brilliant Sally and Derek of Budding Nature and we wandered around St Gothian Sands spotting lovely species enjoying the sunshine. Here is a buff-tailed bumble bee (Bombus terrestris) busy on some sea holly (Eryngium maritimum).

A common blue (polyommatus icarus) enjoying some vibrant bird’s-foot trefoil and a six-spot burnet moth (zygaena filipendulae) feasting on a spiky spear thistle!
Nice to see some flying beauties finally 🦋

With half term here, the beaches will be busier (if the weather ever sorts itself out!) and turtles are seen more often now than you would imagine, likely due to temperature rises and storms. Please have a look at this info and share with others. I also recommend saving the graphic and the BDMLR phone number to your phone so you can quickly access the info. Thanks so much 🐢🤗

Do you know what to do if you find a turtle on the beach? BDMLR advice has been updated recently - turtles should be places in a dry towel to maintain its temperature while BDMLR volunteers are on their way! 🏝️

Hello February! My hibernation is over, I’m so glad the 487 days of January have finally ended. Species recording yesterday brought wondrous clouds, great company, a good explore of the dunes and Rosie MBE adopted a bee (She isn’t an MBE but thoroughly deserves it) Also pictured is a Fallstreak cloud and some amazing skies. Spring, and hope, is around the corner everyone, bring it on, I think we all need it!

I am very proud to call Rosie a good friend. She is incredible, funny, a little bit mischievous and an absolute pleasure to be with. She is a constant fount of knowledge and an asset to the world of volunteering. I just hope I am as nimble as Rosie at that golden age. A new part time venture 💙 Yesterday I had my first induction with the St Ives NCI to become a volunteer Watchkeeper.
How will I cope with panoramic views like this?
New territory, new skill sets, I really can’t wait.
