If your child’s analysis stops at “this shows…”, try asking:

“Why this word?”

Take the phrase “sneer of cold command” from Ozymandias.

Rather than:
“The word ‘sneer’ shows he is powerful.”

Try:
“The word ‘sneer’ suggests contempt, presenting Ozymandias as a ruler who looks down on others.”

Then ask:
“What does that help us understand?”

“His power is rooted in arrogance rather than care for his people.”

As an English teacher and GCSE examiner, I often see students identify a technique and then move on before explaining its significance.

Try this in revision:

📚 Choose a short quotation.
🔍 Underline one interesting word.
✍️ Explain what it suggests.
💭 Connect it to the question.

A useful prompt to remember: “Why this word, and why does it matter?”

The students who cope best with GCSE English are usually the ones who have already learned how to:

✔️ use evidence confidently
✔️ write in detail
✔️ tackle challenging texts

KS3 matters more than people realise.

Well… not in the way most students use them.

❌ Reading pages and hoping it sticks
❌ Highlighting everything
❌ Trying to memorise the entire book
❌ Spending hours “revising” without answering a single exam question

Instead, I’d get them to:

✅ Pick ONE topic
✅ Learn 3–5 key quotes or ideas
✅ Close the book and test what they can remember
✅ Practise applying that knowledge to an actual exam question

Revision guides are a tool. They’re not the revision itself.

As an English teacher and GCSE examiner, one of the biggest things I see students struggle with is turning what they KNOW into what the examiner actually rewards.

And that’s exactly what I teach.

It’s often NOT because they don’t understand the text.

It’s because they don’t know how to turn what they know into the kind of answer the examiner is looking for.

They might have great ideas, but they’re:
❌ not answering the exact question
❌ choosing weak evidence
❌ analysing without enough depth
❌ spending too long on the wrong questions
❌ unsure how to structure their response

And the good news? These are skills that can be taught.

As an experienced English teacher and GCSE examiner, this is exactly what I work on with my students — showing them HOW to approach the paper, structure their ideas and pick up the marks they’re currently missing.

A Grade 3 doesn’t necessarily mean your child “can’t do English”.

Very often, I see students who understand the text — but they’re simply not showing the examiner enough to move into Grade 4 territory.

If this was my child, I’d focus on:

1️⃣ Answering the actual question
Not writing everything they know about the text. Every paragraph needs to link directly back to what they’ve been asked.

2️⃣ Developing analysis
Moving beyond: “This word suggests…” and explaining the bigger idea the writer is communicating.

3️⃣ Exam technique
Knowing what each question wants, how much to write and where the marks actually come from.

More revision isn’t always the answer.

Better, more focused revision is.
