It is Occupational Health Week 2026, and the main theme is “Use occupational health early.”
The HSE requires employers to protect the health, safety, and welfare of employees “so far as is reasonably practicable.” This means implementing regular health checks where staff are exposed to risks such as noise, vibration, COSHH substances, dusts and fumes, working at height, driving duties, asbestos, lead and ionising radiation.
However, many businesses don't know where to start or what their legal responsibilities are.
Over the next few weeks, we'll share more information about what these services actually mean.
First up... Health Surveillance.
Health surveillance is a system of ongoing health checks designed to identify early signs of work-related ill health in employees who are exposed to specific work hazards.
