Record results for Verulam Students!

Verulam Students received their GCSE and Level 2 BTEC exam results today and are celebrating a record year for academic outcomes.

Special mention to an outstanding group of students who averaged grade 9 across all of their GCSE subjects: Francis H, Sebastian S and Thomás B-D. Over a third of students achieved grade 9-7 on average, equivalent to the old A grade. Over 100 of the very highest grade 9s were awarded across a range of subjects.

Headteacher Fergal Moane said “This was a year group to be proud of, they showed incredible commitment and dedication during year 11 and have been rewarded with the outstanding results that they deserve. They have truly lived the Verulam values of excellence, character and respect. As well as their exam results, they should be proud of their work on mental health, student leadership and volunteering.

This consolidates Verulam’s position established over the last 5 years of academic outcomes being consistently in the top 25% of schools nationally. This cohort is the group that has the highest estimated progress score that the school has achieved since the measure was introduced by the government in 2016.

On behalf of all of our staff, we offer congratulations and best wishes for the next step. We look forward to welcoming many of our students back to our thriving sixth form in September.”

Verulam Students received their A-level and Level 3 BTEC exam results today and are excited to have secured their places at university, college or apprenticeships.

Special mention to School Captain Tom Roffe who achieved A* grades in Mathematics, Geography and Physics and is going to Durham University to study Engineering. Tom has been an excellent student leader at Verulam and his hard work and dedication have paid off with outstanding academic achievement.

Other notable students with A* grades included Charlie Waters (2 A*s and an A) who is reading Philosophy/Politics/Law at Warwick, Harrison May (2 A*s and an A) reading Law at Sheffield and Toby Southcombe (2 A*s, an A and a B) studying Electrical Engineering with Space Science at Bath. Philip Glenister achieved A*AB grades and is studying Geography at Exeter. Ben Hale and Alex Evershed both achieved two As and a B grade and are studying Economics at Sheffield and Accounting and Finance at Leeds respectively.

It was also a successful day for those who studied BTEC vocational qualifications with all students achieving a pass or better and more than 20 Distinction and Distinction* grades in Business, Sport and Creative Digital Media. A number of students are undertaking degree apprenticeships as a competitive alternative to university.

Headteacher Fergal Moane said “We are proud of our students and particularly that the overwhelming majority of students achieved the grades necessary to study at their first choice university, college or apprenticeship. This cohort really supported each other and the wider community through leadership, charitable fundraising and mental health. Not only have they achieved highly in academic terms, they have become the best version of themselves and are well prepared for the step into adulthood. Thanks to all of my staff and parents and carers who were there to support them.”
