To jam first, or not to jam first? That is the question.

In all honesty, at Skool we don't ask. For us, jam first is a cultural tradition: it's automatic. But what's interesting about when we share scones, is that yes, it's an act of service, but more importantly to share food is an opportunity to connect through food and through language.

Only connect. Real language learning is never just about grammar and vocabulary. Understanding one another through shared experience is the name of the game.

They say a change of perspective is as good as a rest, but in language learning, a change of perspective can be really effective for progress.

Perhaps we are wired to remember newness? As adults, often our habitual experience can be repetitive, and we forget to remember. Part of our job here at Skool is to embrace newness, and create learning moments that will catalyse remembering.

Looking at the world anew, at what we have not seen or what we have not thought before can accelerate what we know, what we remember, and what we learn.

When you change how you see the world, you change how you articulate it. And that's how we see our function as a school: to create the conditions for you to improve your powers of expression in English.

Drumroll, please: We have some exciting news to share, and it has grown directly out of conversations with our students this year. We're delighted to introduce a new programme: English with Art. 🎨

Cornwall has long been a haven for artists, drawn by its unique light, dramatic coastline, and vibrant landscapes. We've always believed that language develops through shared experience, and this course brings together morning English lessons with creative afternoons.

From plein-air sketching along the coastal path and printmaking in the studio to visiting world-class galleries such as Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden, you’ll explore colour, form, and texture while growing your English confidence in the real world.

The best part? You’ll leave Cornwall with stronger language skills and your very own original artwork to take home - from mixed-media journals to prints and paintings. 🖼️

✨No previous art experience needed; this course is open to all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned creators. All core materials and local transport are included!

Bookings for 2026 are officially open. Please visit our website for more information and booking: https://www.skoolcornwall.com/our-courses/english-with-art

Here at Skool, we learn by doing.

We believe that language acquisition develops through activity: through being amazed, being playful, and learning to see with new eyes.

If improving our English were simply a matter of memorising vocabulary, we'd all be fluent. But language doesn't really work like that. Words become meaningful when they belong to a moment.

Whether we're standing among Hepworth's magical monoliths, walking the coast path, stopping to admire a view, or recreating famous album covers in Truro, English emerges because the experience asks something of us. We ask questions. We laugh. We wonder. We tell stories. We connect.

That's where confidence comes from.

Language isn't built word by word. It's built person by person, conversation by conversation, experience by experience.

That's how we learn at Skool.

Souls by the sea. Our afternoon sessions have been sun and sea drenched this last few weeks.

Small groups, making connections, a safe space to just go for it and speak, make mistakes, and learn!

Good food, great company & the ocean helps a lot too!

🌧️ Rain or shine! ☀️

While we’re soaking up a proper heatwave this week, things looked very different just a few days ago! Instead of glorious sunshine, we were treated to lots of dramatic grey skies, cooler temperatures, and that famous Cornish mizzle (mist + drizzle).

But a bit of liquid sunshine didn’t stop our intrepid Skool students from exploring our stunning St Agnes coastline during their afternoon walking activity.

Here is what our brave hikers discovered along the coast path:

🌊 Wheal Coates: We hiked up to this iconic, cliffside engine house. It’s a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a dramatic reminder of Cornwall’s rich tin mining history. Looking at it against the moody skies felt like stepping straight into a Poldark episode!

🍦The Famous Hedgehog Ice Cream: No Cornish walk is complete without a treat from Chapel Porth. We fueled up on legendary Hedgehog Ice Creams, rich vanilla ice cream, topped with a massive dollop of Cornish clotted cream, and rolled in crushed hazelnuts. Pure heaven!

🦇Bolster’s Cave: Down on the beach, we explored the sea caves, including the legendary "Bolster" cave. Local folklore says this massive cavern is named after a mythical, cruel giant named Bolster who used to terrorise St Agnes. Standing inside it with the echoing waves was incredible.

Although the weather wasn't perfect, the wild Atlantic Ocean looked beautifully mystical and dramatic. There is truly no such thing as bad weather when you're exploring Cornwall...

🌊 Beyond the Classroom: Where our students meet after Skool 🏞️

Learning at Skool doesn’t stop when our lessons finish. Some of the best English practice happens when our students meet up afterwards to explore the village!

Here are the three local spots where you’ll regularly find our students winding down:

🍕Schooners: Right on the beach at Trevaunance Cove. The ultimate spot to grab a local craft beer, tuck into fresh sourdough pizza, and watch the surfers catch waves.

🍺The Driftwood Spars: A historic 16th-century pub with cozy wood fires and its own micro-brewery. Perfect for experiencing authentic Cornish pub culture and chatting with the locals.

🍽️The Peterville Inn: Known for its fantastic, warm atmosphere and incredible food. It’s the go-to place for a relaxed afternoon drink and a great laugh with other students.

To our past students: which of these venues holds your favorite memories of life after class?

⚡️New blog post⚡️

Wondering how we actually teach English at Skool? Or maybe a little unsure it might feel like being back in a classroom? Our founder Toby has shared his thoughts on what makes Skool different from school, and the ideas behind our approach.

Here at Skool Cornwall, we don't have big groups, no pressure, and no endless grammar drills. Just small classes, real conversations, and space to actually start using English in a natural way.

We help people move past that “stuck” feeling when speaking feels difficult, and build confidence step by step through talking.
