🍓 Fruit Picking 🍓

Perfect way to spend some time off in the sunshine today! Really recommend it if you’re looking for an excuse to get out of the house with (or without!) the children! ☀️❤️

🌟 Phonics/Spelling Activity🌟

Are your children getting bored of learning their phonics sounds or spellings? This little activity is a great way to make it a bit more exciting. Hide words amongst some tissue paper (could even use kitchen roll for this or hide the words amongst leaves/grass) and get your child to pick out each word and practice reading it. They could then sort them into their sounds or practice writing them. This activity is not only really simple but also so versatile. 📝

📚 Children’s Picture Books 📚

I am a massive fan of children’s picture books and even more so when they encourage conversations or help children to understand the world better!

This week I have been adding to my collection with some books that include themes of inclusion and diversity, gender stereotypes and mental health. I thought I would share some of my old favourites and new purchases on here before I share them in my lessons! Most of these books have read-along versions on YouTube too.

For other brilliant diverse book ideas, search for “” on Instagram. 🌟

🌟 Shape Hunt 🌟

Need something to make the daily walk a little bit more exciting? Why not go on a 2D shape hunt!

You could take some paper and record where you find the different shapes or even let your child take photos on your phone of the shapes they find. 📸
When you finish your hunt, you can use your list/photos to look at the properties of 2D shapes, practice counting, find the least/most common, make tables and graphs - the possibilities are endless!

🌟 Going Back to School 🌟

Need a simple way to explain what going back to school might be like? This social story has been created to explain some of the changes that will be happening when children eventually go back. It is a great way to discuss it with young children, particularly those with SEND!

🪂 Make a Parachute 🪂

Lovely little activity to do over this bank holiday weekend! Lots of hidden science and maths opportunities as well.

Have a lovely bank holiday everyone! 🌟

Here's a great Sunday afternoon activity. Let's get parachute building! Feel free to involve the kids too :-). You can make it a competition, time how long they take to land and the slowest one wins (probably the best parachute - let's face it). Have fun.

🔎 Maths Challenge Treasure Hunt 🔎

Any “challenge” or treasure hunt is exciting when you’re little so this activity always goes down well!

Write maths questions on bits of paper (or these amazing fluorescent stars!) and place them around any area (garden, living room, whole house). Give your child the challenge of finding them all and then working out all of the answers. You can make it even harder by matching the numbers to letters in the alphabet to spell out a “secret message” at the end.

We played this this morning in one of my tutoring sessions focusing on addition using a number line but it could be adapted to any level or maths focus. Even virtually it was very exciting, especially with the talk of a prize at the end! 🌟🏆

🌟 Word Splat 🌟

This little phonics/spelling activity helps with learning spellings or recognising phonics sounds. You can even use it to help with recognising numbers.

- Write down words you want to practice on flash cards (available to buy online), post it notes or even just scrap pieces of paper.
- Spread the words out on a surface (tables, floors and grass all work for this).
- Say a word/phonics sound and get your child to “splat it” (with a wooden spoon, hands or fly swatter).
- Count how many they got right! Can they beat their score next time?

Have fun! 😊

🌟 How Many Seconds? 🌟

One of this morning’s virtual activities involved becoming more familiar with what a second is and measuring and recording time in seconds (Year 1).

We used a stopwatch (a phone or iPad works well for this) and timed how many seconds it took to do different challenges. We then recorded each of our times and compared them using language such as quicker/quickest and slower/slowest. From here we discussed that there are 60 seconds in a minute and in the next lesson we will look at this in more detail. This is such a simple activity but great for helping children understand the concept of time with the bonus of some added competition and movement! ⏱

🌟Bank Holiday Project 🌟

Thought this little project was worth sharing as it might be something nice to do with your children over the bank holiday weekend! How often are they the ones in charge of the camera?!

The great news is the entries are being judged on the emotion and experience rather than technical ability so it’s open to everyone. Even if your entry doesn’t get featured at least you’ll have some lovely photos to remember this crazy time by!
