In today’s Wild & Free session we made pigments using elements from nature, for example wood in the fire pit contains carbon. To make a pigment you have to add hydrogen and oxygen (we used water) and boil the liquid. As shown below we used control pigments to gather whether the reaction causing a colour change was due to acid or alkaline present. The group decided the alkaline fir needle pigment showed up best on paper. This is an example of a simple experiment that can be conducted with nature in nature, and allows children a chance to be hands on with learning.

Learning does not just occur in the classroom. In last week’s Blooming Bud session the children took the lead to build initially a track for trucks however it turned into a bridge for safe animal passage. During this task they displayed both only scientific engagement but also communication and teamwork skills. Learning can occur in nature…

🍁 It’s officially spooky month here at Wild Isle! Did you know that Halloween can be traced back over 2000 years and started as a way of marking the end of the harvest, and the start of winter. Don’t worry Winter is not here yet, as Autumn is just coming into full flow. The orange leaves, the acorns on the floor, mushrooms that you cannot find in the supermarket. October is the perfect month to explore nature, and learn how the islands landscape adapts itself to deal with the temperature change. 🍁
