The chat on the playground amongst Forms 3 and 4 has not been about the latest round of sixes football or hockey but the resurrection of the annual sixes conker competition. The last few weeks the children have been collecting, curating and cooking their conkers ready for battle.

With safety instructions delivered the competition was fierce but Bradshaw Boyces ‘conkered’ all before them in a tightly contested challenge!

🎙️ Sound on for conker chat and celebrations!

There is more to Model Farming Club than building miniature farms! 🚜

It’s like a micro version of a farmers market up in the eaves of the Make, Play, Learn Centre. Pupils haggling for equipment and animals from farm to farm, whilst a team of helpers are building field fences from lollipop sticks, odd bits of wood and glue guns!

What makes Model Farming Club so special is seeing pupils from Fom 3 right up to Form 8 working together, sharing ideas and stories with a genuine love of farming and life in the countryside.

The Anglo Saxons have arrived in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Form 4 Historians have been learning all about the arrival of the Anglo Saxons in England and in particular one of the most powerful (and local) rulers in King Offa, King of Mercia. The class were set to task to build their own cross section of Offa’s D**e separating not just 2 modern day nations but the ancient kingdoms of Powys and Mercia which lies just a few miles from Packwood.

Shepherds Delight…

Time ‘playing out’ with friends in the evening feels like a rare phenomenon nowadays; such a simple childhood pleasure that the boarders embrace until the sun goes down. This week they have been making the most of beautiful autumn evenings and spectacular red skies over Packwood.

As we head into the first exeat with a bag full of conkers there is already a HUGE amount to reflect back on and celebrate from the first weeks of term.

Not least a new shape of the day for teachers and pupils, offering more guided study time for all pupils and additional co-curricular activity time for Form 7 and 8s. Packwoodians, as always have embraced change with the positivity, adaptability and enthusiasm they always do.

Out on the pitches it feels like we have never been away with multiple hockey and football fixtures under our belt and the sixes cross country relays last weekend - every pupil in Forms 3-8 have represented the school and their Six in some way in just a few short weeks.

Our Michael Palin and Sport Scholarship candidates are busy preparing across academics, sport, drama, arts and music ready for their assessments Shrewsbury School in October.

Form 8s kickstarted the term with 3 days in Anglesey on a Leadership Retreat with Mr Goldsmith, Mr Weston and their Form Tutors. Since returning a number of them have began their applications for this terms Head of School positions.

Rehearsals have begun for the Senior Production of Mary Poppins with the help of two wonderful Shrewsbury School pupils who have assisted during Thursday afternoon Packwood Award sessions.

In the boarding house, Mr and Mrs Handaji have been welcomed with open arms. With a considerable amount of experience as Houseparents they have already made their mark in continuing to provide our boarders with a nurturing home from home. Girls boarding has become so popular at Packwood that work is underway to extend the number of dorms for girls available after half term.

Not forgetting the 33 new pupils who joined us at the start of term and the Reception and Form 3s who have made a significant leap in their school adventure with unwavering resilience and excitement.

As we post this update, The Friends of Packwood, are co-ordinating their first event of the academic calendar, The FoP Car Boot Sale. The ideal way to recycle and re-purpose after the summer clear-out!

Life at Packwood continues to be ‘busy, yet unhurried’.

Wishing you all a very Happy Exeat 🌳

On Saturday evening Mr and Mrs Handaji transformed The Front Hall to host a Moroccan cookery evening for some of the boarders 🥘 Whilst sipping fresh mint tea they cooked traditional Batbout over the fire.
