*****St Edward's Ends School Year with Spectacular 80s-Themed EDFEST Celebration*****

We rounded off the academic year in unforgettable style with EDFEST – a vibrant 1980s-themed festival celebrating the school's rich history, resilient spirit and remarkable community.

While we are proudly recognised as the oldest Catholic primary school in Runcorn, with its original school dating back to 1846, many may not realise that the current school building was rebuilt in 1980. That milestone inspired this year's nostalgic 80s theme, bringing colour, music and plenty of fun to the end-of-year celebrations.

The festival was a well-deserved reward for children and staff, who have worked incredibly hard throughout the year. It also provided a welcome opportunity for the school community to come together and celebrate after a challenging and uncertain month during ongoing school consultations.

Children embraced the occasion by arriving in fantastic 80s fancy dress, with neon colours, leg warmers, denim jackets and iconic hairstyles transforming the school into a true blast from the past. Throughout the day, pupils enjoyed a range of themed crafts, a movie experience and delicious refreshments.

One of the highlights of EDFEST was the lively catwalk, where children confidently showcased their talents before singing and dancing their hearts out to classic 80s anthems, including the much-loved Eye of the Tiger. Their enthusiasm, confidence and joy reflected everything that makes St Edward's such a special place to learn and grow.

The day was a celebration not only of the decade but also of the school's unique family atmosphere, where every child is encouraged to shine. Staff were delighted to see so many smiling faces enjoying a memorable day together.

As the school community looks to the future, We are calling on former pupils, parents and families to share their positive memories and experiences of the school.

🗣️Will you speak out about the threatened school closures/mergers in Runcorn?
🙋🏻‍♀️We’re looking for people who will be directly affected by the council’s plans to speak at our public meeting this Wednesday.
❌We are against the closures and believe there are credible alternatives that the council have not considered.
💷The spare capacity in the primary schools can be used for specialist placements to reduce the amount of money (one third of this year’s higher needs budget) that is spent on out borough SEND placements in independent settings.

These photographs tell a story that spans almost 180 years.
The original St Edward's Church and School on Windmill Street was built in 1846 and served generations of local children before being demolished in 1981. When the school moved to its current site, it didn't leave its history behind.

As the commemorative booklet from the opening of the new building explains:

"St. Edward's is by no means a new school... In a less tangible way we hope the old school lives on. We will try to maintain that caring, family atmosphere for which St. Edward's has long been known."

That promise is still visible today.
The beautiful stained-glass window from the original Windmill Street school was carefully preserved and now welcomes children in the current building.
The old master's desk also made the journey, standing as a reminder of the thousands of pupils who came before. These aren't just historic objects—they are symbols of continuity, tradition and community.

**** Silver Success for Our Healthy School! ****

We are delighted to announce that our school has proudly achieved the Silver Healthy Schools Award this year, recognising our continued commitment to promoting health, wellbeing and positive lifestyles for all of our pupils.

Our brand-new Junior Safety Officers had the honour of representing the school at the special awards event, where they met the Mayor of Halton and proudly collected our Silver Healthy Schools certificate on behalf of the entire school community.

The day was packed with exciting and informative workshops, giving our pupils the opportunity to learn about a wide range of important health and wellbeing topics. Sessions included healthy eating, sustainability, emotional regulation, growing well, growing up, healthy teeth and much more.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and returned to school full of enthusiasm and fresh ideas. They are looking forward to putting what they have learned into practice when they officially begin their Junior Safety Officer roles in September.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved in achieving this fantastic award. We are incredibly proud of our pupils and staff for their dedication to creating a happy, healthy and safe school environment.

***** What a hot and sunny week it has been! *****

With record temperatures being experienced across the country, our children have continued to impress us with their positive attitudes and ability to stay focused in class despite the warm weather.

A big thank you goes to all the families who generously donated ice pops and ice lollies throughout the week. These delicious frozen treats have helped everyone stay cool and refreshed during the hottest days.

Class 2 particularly enjoyed taking a break from the sunshine to enjoy some delicious cooling ice lollies, which were gratefully received by all the children. Their smiles said it all!

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed. Your kindness has helped make a very warm week much more enjoyable for our pupils.

As we look ahead, we are hoping for slightly cooler temperatures next week, but until then, we will continue to make the most of the shade while staying safe and hydrated.

*****Class 1 Enjoys a Paw-some Visit to the Local Vets! *****

Class 1 had a wonderful afternoon visiting our local veterinary surgery as part of their topic, People Who Help Us, where they have been learning about the important roles people play in our community.

During the visit, the children discovered how vets and veterinary nurses care for animals and help keep them healthy. They had the exciting opportunity to use a real stethoscope to listen to their own heartbeats, giving them a taste of what it is like to be a vet.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was meeting a friendly dog who was recovering from surgery. The children learnt how the veterinary team looks after animals before and after their operations, helping them to recover safely and comfortably.

There were also plenty of smiles as the class enjoyed lots of cuddles and fusses with Millie, one of the vets' lovely dogs, who was more than happy to greet everyone.

The visit brought the children's learning to life and inspired lots of thoughtful questions about caring for animals and the important work carried out by veterinary professionals every day.

A huge thank you to everyone at Laurels Veterinary Surgery for giving Class 1 such a warm welcome and for providing such a fun, informative and memorable experience. We are incredibly grateful for your time and kindness!
