I see this more and more in schools. Classrooms are too overwhelming for lots of our children. The curriculum is too fast-paced and jam-packed and children switch off. Some simply refuse to work in the classroom and spend their entire day in the corridor. Often only interacting with a handful of TAs. The curriculum has to change - it has to engage the children, not turn so many of them away from coming to school to learn.

Annual Review meetings to discuss your child's EHCP can seem daunting, especially if several external professionals are attending. Remember that everyone there SHOULD have your child's best interests at heart and want to support you/them in the best way possible. Go in prepared. Know what points you want to get across and seek clarity on the information you are given in return. Ask questions. Lots of them. Be open. A good Annual Review should provide you with answers and a clear understanding of an action plan.

It's not just Educational Psychologists and Occupational Therapists who can provide evidence needed for an EHCNA referral - Specialist Teachers can offer this too. They have lots of experience, they can offer loads of advice and they work with schools to ensure the advice is implemented. If you're a parent wanting additional evidence to support your child's EHCNA, then ask a Specialist Teacher for their input. If you're a parent of a SEND child and you want to commission private reports to bolster your evidence for an EHCNA referral, go for it. The law is on your side. Don't feel that 'paid for' evidence will be dismissed or looked on unfavourably - all evidence must be considered. The SEND Code of Practice states that Local Authorities must take account of all information submitted.
