"Dismantling the Charity Industrial Complex: It’s Time for a New Approach"

One of the most significant impediments to sustainable progress in Africa is the prevailing top-down approach adopted by many international aid and charity organizations. An alarming 65% or more of donations are often absorbed by logistics, salaries, administrative overheads, and operational equipment, leaving little for direct community impact.

Imagine the transformative potential if just 20% of global aid contributions were redirected to empower local cooperatives. Unlike many charities and humanitarian agencies that have consistently failed to address the root causes of poverty, the cooperative model has proven to be resilient, sustainable, and community-driven.

It’s time to reconsider our strategy. The current model — the so-called charity industrial complex — perpetuates dependency. Instead, we must channel resources directly into cooperatives, where funds are transparent, accountable, and generational in impact.

Over the past six decades, more than $1.3 trillion in aid has poured into Africa. Yet, the narrative remains unchanged: over 450 million Africans still live in extreme poverty. This is not a failure of generosity, but of misguided ex*****on.
