Whether just starting out, looking to grow or improve performance and productivity. Arcadia Alive is a bespoke business training and development consultancy that specialises in delivering exceptional human factor consultancy, training and development via a fusion of two disciplines: psychology and management. We believe ultimately it is people that will make the difference and there is a research

activity in Insead University in Paris, that suggest that long-term sustainable competitive advantage only comes from people. Their reasoning being whether it’s the Products, Services, Systems or Processes that give a company its advantage, currently they are all underpinned by people and they can be copied. But the one thing that you cannot copy are the people themselves. If we accept that people are essential, it is then getting the best out of those people and their skill level then productivity and competitive advantage will come.

One reason that a woman may be less likely to start a business is that she is usually a family’s primary caregiver.

Juggling a demanding leadership role alongside childcare can be complex, emotionally fraught and extremely costly.

The Rose Review found disproportionate primary/family care responsibilities affect female entrepreneurs throughout the entrepreneurial journey. Women are twice as likely as men to mention family responsibilities as a barrier to starting a business.

In addition, for female entrepreneurs with children, primary care responsibilities are the #1 barrier to further business success, with 46% of female parent entrepreneurs identifying it as a “very important” or “important” barrier versus 33% of male parents with businesses.

With fewer female founders, the pool of women who can mentor and advise their fellow entrepreneurs is consequently smaller. This makes it harder for enterprising women to learn from their peers and tap into those who have ‘been there, done that’.

More women-focused networking events and clubs have cropped up in recent years. Female leaders are also finding one another online, through Facebook groups, Instagram and other platforms.

A recent report by Vistaprint found that British female business owners find failure more difficult to overcome than their male counterparts. More than two-thirds of female entrepreneurs admitted they find it hard to bounce back from failures, compared with 55% of men.

This fear of failure is actively holding back women from creating start-ups: one in eight working women want to start their own business

Feelings of anxiety and the fear of failure can be exacerbated by working in male-dominated industries, where female founders can feel excluded or patronised.

A reason why so many women are discouraged from Starting and Growing a Business is still due to bias against women.

Some female leaders experience outright sexism. According to a Telegraph poll, two-thirds of 750 female founders felt they were not taken seriously when pitching to investors, and felt they were treated differently to their male counterparts.

Yet there is no evidence that female-led companies perform worse than their male-led counterparts. Indeed, several studies have found they are actually more profitable. According to research from Boston Consulting Group and Mass Challenge, businesses founded by women deliver twice the revenue for each dollar invested, compared with those founded by men.

A reason why so many women are discouraged from Starting and Growing a Business is due to a Shortage of Funding.

Last year, the Telegraph, alongside 200 British business leaders submitted an open letter to the Government, highlighting the chronic and unfair finance gap faced by female entrepreneurs.

Just 9% of the funding funneled into UK start-ups goes to women-run businesses, according to the Entrepreneurs Network. Women also tend to start businesses with much less available capital than male entrepreneurs.

New research from insurer AXA found that 63% of men start their business straight out of a full-time job compared with just 38% of women, who are often working part-time or coming out of a career break. This puts them at a major disadvantage.

Why are so Many Women Discouraged from Starting and Growing a Business?

Only one in five businesses in the UK are run by a woman, according to official figures.

Last September, the British Government announced it was launching a review into the barriers to women in business. The Rose review revealed that the advancement of female entrepreneurs could be worth £250bn to the UK economy.

The Rose Review found:

- Women do not lack ability or ambition. Yet only 1 in 3 UK entrepreneurs is female: a gender gap equivalent to 1.1 million missing businesses.
- Only 6% of UK women run their own businesses
- Women are less likely to pursue entrepreneurship: Just 8.6% of all UK women surveyed said they plan to start a business in the next three years, compared to 14.3% of men.

According to various studies, there are five main challenges that women face when starting and scaling a business. Click on the blog link below to find out what the five main challenges are and how we can help -

Consider HOW your outgoings are actually paid?

- Are you 100% responsible for all your ‘family’ outgoings?
- Are you 100% responsible for some of your ‘family’ outgoings, whilst others are 100% responsible for the remainder?
- Do you share all your expenses on a 50/50 basis with a spouse or partner?

And a final thought. We can let the outcome drive the way we think, feel, and act, when our own thinking, feelings, and action drive the outcome.

A Personal Survival Budget is made up of three key sections.

The third is total surplus or deficit – The balance.

This final section is the difference between your total personal income ( A ) and your total personal expenses ( B ).
e.g. “Total personal income ( A ) – Total personal expenses ( B ) = Your monthly balance"

If this figure is negative, it means that your personal expenses are greater than your personal income for that period and you may need to think about ways to either cut your costs or bring in a new income. Conversely, if the figure is positive, it means you’re earning more income than you are generating costs – great news for your savings account!
