In Rooks Nest class, the children have been learning about electricity ⚡️

They have been creating their own simple circuits using batteries and wires to turn a lightbulb on. They had to ensure the circuit was complete before the lightbulb would turn on.

This morning Duckpuddle pupils took part in a very exciting football tournament ⚽️ 🥅

With thanks to the Royston Town Football Club and Beth Williamson, leader of the Sport Partnership at King James Academy for leading this session. The children loved every moment of it! 😁

This week in Forest School, we continued our topic ‘Colours’. 🎨

The children focused their attention on the large maple tree where we meet for each session. We looked at the very bare branches and discussed the changes it makes throughout the year. 🌳

🍁 🍃 🍂 We gathered up a range of leaves and compared the different sizes and talked about the shades of colours we could see.

A great question we investigated was ‘how long does it take for leaves to decompose?’ Luckily we have new compost bin and in this it will take 3-6 months, however, left in a pile it would take up to a year!

We then created - book mark by matching the autumnal shades on the card. No ‘leaf’ lesson is ever complete without a big leaf firework for the children to enjoy 🌟

It may be half term, but here is an activity that was inspired by the wonderful autumn leaves that are falling all around us. 🍃 🍁 🌳

Honeypot children used leaves to paint and print 🎨 . They went on a leaf hunt at playtime and brought back leaves that varied in colour, size and texture. We had a detailed discussion about the names of the trees and which leaves belonged to which tree, and we also spoke about the colours we could see as well as the intricate detail that is on each leaf.

After some in-depth conversation, the children decided to use paint and create printed patterns. This developed into painting the leaves with the intention to create a hanging autumn mobile once they were dry.

We are really looking forward to continuing our learning about autumn when we get back to school and we go on to introduce the new topic of Festivals and Celebrations. We will learn all about autumn, Bonfire Night, Remebrance Day, Diwali and, as the seasons change to winter, we will learn about Christmas 🎄❄️ ⭐️

All the children were very excited on Friday as Mrs Oram found a scroll, toadstool cupcakes and magical glitter right next to our new Fairy Garden 📜 🧚🏼‍♂️ 🍄 ✨

The excitement and squeals continued as Mrs Oram read out the scroll, informing us that some village fairies had decided to use Therfield First School as their ‘forever home’ and they were going to move in that night! 🧚🏽‍♀️

A big thank you to Emily Stirk, Chris Barrett and all of the parent helpers who joined together to help us create this magical and awe inspiring area for the children to enjoy. We have already seen some wonderful imaginative play and language from the children whilst exploring this area at playtime and lunchtime. 🧚🏿🧝✨

This half term, Duckpuddle Class have been very busy learning all about the story of 'Supertato'! 🥔

At the beginning of the topic the children came into school to a very messy classroom, even the clock had been drawn on! All eyes went to the wicked Evil Pea. The children wrote wanted posters and placed them around the school. 📌

They went on to sequence and retell the story, create and describe their own super vegetable characters and as a home learning project they created their own setting box. Using all of this they went on to write their own story. 🥕🥦✏️

Pupils at Therfield First School delivered afternoon tea to 170 houses in the village as part of their annual Harvest Gift of Giving project.

In Forest School this week, the children were so excited as they got the chance to build a fire! 🔥

Each class learnt about the three things that are needed to build and light a fire successfully. They then collected dry fire wood and used the waffle method to build the structure. Once they had achieved this, they built a teepee of sticks carefully around the base.

We discussed the importance of fire safety and how to behave near a burning fire.

Once the fire was lit we all enjoyed watching the dancing flames and singing camp fire songs.

This lesson was in preparation for next week when we conclude our learning on the senses and get to cook and taste our own food that we have harvested 🥔 🔥.
