Not only has MTD/1 been proven to reduce silage losses, but independent studies across a range of forage crops show cows fed silage preserved with MTD/1 produced a higher average milk yield. Great session with Wynnstay Group! 👌

A full day of learning and practical insight - starting with a morning on farm, followed by an afternoon of product information, silage report analysis, a cob ripeness workshop and, of course, a quiz to finish things off, with a box of chocolates up for grabs! 🍫

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. 🌱☀️

Across parts of England and Wales, drought is putting pressure on grass stocks and maize crops.

For farmers, the challenge isn't just growing enough forage.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁.

Here are 10 things worth considering now:
1️⃣ Wait for rain before applying fertiliser or slurry to drought-stressed ground.
2️⃣ Plan winter forage early. Consider winter grazing or forage crops where conditions allow.
3️⃣ Do a forage budget now. Know your likely shortfall before winter arrives.
4️⃣ Secure additional forage early. Standing cereals, wholecrop and maize may become harder - and more expensive - to source later.
5️⃣ Walk your maize. Hot weather can accelerate maturity, so don't rely solely on the calendar.
6️⃣ Protect every tonne you ensile. Rapid wilting and good clamp management are critical. Poor practice can lead to losses of over 25%.
7️⃣ Consider a proven silage additive to help reduce dry matter losses during fermentation.
8️⃣ Maximise any grass you can grow. Surplus forage could become a valuable commodity later.
9️⃣ Review herd performance. Culling barren or poor-performing animals may help reduce pressure on forage stocks.
🔟 Look at the cost of NOT buying forage. Paying more today may be cheaper than facing a serious shortage later.

Yeasts have already begun to metabolise sugars, raising pH, producing CO₂, and supporting mould growth.

Aerobic spoilage can quietly eat away 8–10% of dry matter, reducing feed quality and palatability.

Hot, dry conditions could bring maize harvest forward by 2–3 weeks this year.

With forage already under pressure, getting the most from the crop will be crucial. Take the time to get into the field, assess how crops are developing and be ready to harvest when they reach the optimum stage.

And if you have the opportunity to secure additional forage, it may pay to act sooner rather than later.
