I work closely with parents to set targeted milestones, develop sustainable strategies and achieve ambitious goals. Almost a decade teaching in primary schools has confirmed my belief that when it comes to passing
exams, technique is everything. It was a general awareness of the importance of strategy that
enabled me to achieve 13A* grades at GCSE whilst I was a pupil at a top Kent grammar school.

1. Poor time management

2. Feature Spotting
Identifying the author's techniques without discussing their impact
3. Retelling the text's plot
Failure to consider the author's intent and how it relates to the text as a whole, beyond a summary of the characters or events
Instead consider
1. Using P.E.T.A.L.
Point, evidence, technique, analysis and link to structure your responses.
2. Working backwards!
Prioritise the questions which hold the most marks. 1 minute often equates to 1 mark.
3. Refer to the author
Provide some context and intent behind the author's work.
