So, I’m opening the doors to Wise Ed Learning for two free Meet & Greet sessions. 💙

Come and see the learning space, meet me, ask any questions and have a relaxed chat about your child and how I might be able to support them.

There’s absolutely no obligation. It’s simply a chance to have a look around and get to know each other.

🎒❤️ “I don’t want to go to school.”
If you’re hearing this from your Reception child, don’t panic. The tiredness can start to creep in as the excitement of those first few weeks wears off.
Validate the feeling, notice the positives and keep those after-school hours simple: snack, rest, connect and decompress. 🥰
Reception is a HUGE transition!
You haven’t got it wrong. They haven’t got it wrong. They’re just tired. ❤️

🎧 BACK TO SCHOOL: HAVE YOU TRIED AUDIOBOOKS?

Here’s something I really want parents of reluctant readers to remember: A child’s reading ability shouldn’t limit the stories and ideas they can enjoy. ❤️

If a child is still developing their decoding and fluency, they might struggle to independently read a book that is actually perfectly suited to their age, interests and understanding.

That’s where audiobooks can be brilliant.
🎧 They can enjoy stories independently
🧠 Build vocabulary and listening comprehension
✨ Hear rich language beyond their current reading level
📚 Explore authors, genres and topics they might otherwise miss

Because being a reluctant or developing reader doesn’t mean a child should have to wait until their reading catches up before they can experience brilliant stories.

So if your child loves their Mini Yoto, headphones or audiobooks…

Let them listen. Let them enjoy. Let them discover. ❤️

Reading can look different and that’s okay.

⚽ BACK TO SCHOOL: FOLLOW THE INTEREST!

Got a reluctant reader? One of the best places to start is often what they already love.

If your child is football mad, don’t feel like you have to find the perfect football book and convince them to read it.

Look at all the different ways they could read about football:
📰 Magazines
📖 Annuals
😂 Joke books
📚 Fact books
🏆 Match programmes

And this doesn’t just apply to football!
Dinosaurs. Minecraft. Animals. Space. Cars. Taylor Swift. Whatever they’re obsessed with, use it!

The reading doesn’t have to look like a traditional reading book to count.

Following a child’s interests can make reading feel relevant, purposeful and enjoyable. That’s often the first step towards them choosing to read for themselves.

Don’t start with what you want them to read. Start with what they WANT to know about. ❤️📚

📚 BACK TO SCHOOL: 5 INTERACTIVE BOOKS FOR RELUCTANT READERS

Interactive books are another brilliant way to tempt a reluctant reader into picking up a book.

And before you think “aren’t lift-the-flap books for younger children?” Absolutely not! 👀

There are some fantastic interactive books that are perfect for KS2, particularly when they’re linked to a child’s interests.

I love them for reluctant readers because they:
✨ Entice children in: there’s something to discover, open, reveal or investigate.
❤️ Can be linked to their interests: whether that’s history, animals, space, geography or simply finding out random facts!
📖 Break reading into small chunks: a little bit of text can feel much more manageable than a whole page of dense writing.
🖼️ Use lots of pictures and visual information: there is plenty to explore alongside the words.

So don’t be afraid to offer a book that might look a little different from a traditional story or reading book.

The aim is to get them curious enough to open it. ❤️

Here are 5 from our shelves to get you started… 📚

🔎 BACK TO SCHOOL: 5 LOOK & FIND BOOKS FOR RELUCTANT READERS

Look & Find books might seem like they’re simply a bit of fun, but there is actually so much valuable learning happening while children explore those busy pages!

🔎 Scanning skills: Children are searching, scanning and locating specific information.
👀 Attention to detail: Children need to look carefully and notice small details.
🧠 Following instructions: “Can you find…?” encourages children to listen, process information and search for a specific target.
💬 Language development: Don’t underestimate the power of talking! Asking children what they can see, what they think is happening and introducing new vocabulary all supports their language development.

For a child who is reluctant to pick up a traditional book, a Look & Find can be a brilliant way to develop positive experiences with books without the pressure of having to read lots of words.
Because reading for pleasure starts with finding something you enjoy. 📚

Here are 5 from our shelves that I’d definitely recommend trying!

Which one would your child choose? 👀

📚 BACK TO SCHOOL: LET’S GET THE READING ROUTINE BACK!

After the freedom of the summer holidays, getting back into a reading routine can sometimes feel like a bit of a battle… especially if you have a reluctant reader.

My biggest piece of advice?

Start with what they enjoy. ❤️

Reading doesn't always have to mean sitting down with a school reading book and working through every word.

Magazines, comics, fact books, look-and-find books and books linked to their favourite interests can all help children see reading as something they want to do, rather than something they have to do.

And if bedtime reading has become a battle over who reads the words, take the pressure off.

Read to them. Talk about the story. Look at the pictures. Ask questions. Let them choose the book.

Because before we worry about reading lots of words independently, we want children to develop something just as important:

A positive identity as a reader. 📖❤️

This week, I'm going to share 5 books a day from our own shelves, with each day focusing on a different type of book that can be a brilliant starting point for reluctant readers.

🔎 5 Look-and-Find books
❤️ 5 books linked to children's interests
👀 5 Lift-the-Flap books
📰 5 Magazines & Comics
🤓 5 Fact Books

5 books. Every day. All week. 📚

Hopefully you'll spot a few that your child would love to pick up! ❤️
