Contact us for personalised SEND support 😊 About Me:

Hi, I’m Hannah, a dedicated SEND tutor based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. I offer tailored tuition for children and young people across both primary and secondary age ranges. Supporting children and young people with special educational needs is my passion! I take time to understand each learner’s unique strengths and challenges, and enjoy creating fun, engaging, and highly personalised lessons that help your child to grow in confidence and independence. My experience:

I have experience teaching across the curriculum with learners with a wide range of needs, including SLD, MLD, SLCN, SEMH, Autism, PDA, ADHD, dyslexia, Down Syndrome, global developmental delay and more, as well as those with mental health needs such as anxiety, EBSA and attachment difficulties. Originally a secondary English teacher, I went on to teach for five years in a primary special school where I was Literacy lead, then moved back into secondary education, leading and teaching in a resourced provision for four years. As well as SEND tuition, I now work for an educational publishing company, providing advice and resources for SEND teachers across England. My approach:

Bespoke planning: I create highly bespoke planning for each learner, taking into account their strengths and interests, areas of need and learning style. Holistic: I believe that confidence is critical to learning, so I aim to get to know the whole child and work with them to develop their self-belief and independent learning skills. I incorporate their interests, passions and preferred ways of working into my sessions, ensuring that they look forward to their tuition and gain skills that will help them make progress at school, and that they can take forward into all areas of life. Neurodiversity Affirming: I want your child to believe in themself as a learner, and develop an understanding and appreciation of their own strengths and how they learn best. I aim to equip my students with strategies that will help them to learn in any context. Availability and location:
I can offer sessions at a range of times, please get in touch to discuss my current availability. I offer tuition across North Leeds. An additional travel cost may apply for addresses outside of this area. Most sessions take place in the client’s home, however if you would like to discuss alternative locations or online sessions for your child, please get in touch. If you are searching for a SEND tutor in Leeds who can provide tailored support for your child, get in touch for a free initial consultation - I’d love to hear from you. 😊

SEND, trauma, anxiety - there are many reasons why engaging with learning can be challenging for some children and young people. But by building trust, creating a safe space, and learning how to regulate emotional and sensory needs together, engagement and interest in learning can grow. And small steps of progress like this one can represent a huge breakthrough in a child’s relationship with learning.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

So if education keeps pouring more and more information into a child, without igniting their interests and curiosity,

the pail begins to overflow. And when that child also has additional needs,

this can result in loss of confidence, anxiety, overwhelm & low self esteem. And all of this means,

learning is harder or impossible, mental health suffers, sense of belonging is lost, the child doesn’t see themselves as a learner, enjoyment of learning is damaged & the child’s needs become a barrier that they never needed to be. But,

this cycle can be broken!
How?

Encourage your child’s hobbies and interests. This shows them that the things that matter to them are important and valued, and opens up opportunities for learning. And,

praise the qualities they can control, like patience, persistence, curiosity, creativity, self-reflection, problem solving, kindness, focus, bravery. And,

co-regulate with them, and model your own regulation:
“I understand this feels challenging. Shall we try it together?”
“when I get an anxious feeling in my tummy, it helps if I take 5 deep breaths”
“I can see you’re feeling overwhelmed, shall we take a walk together?”
And remember,

you aren’t alone, and you aren’t responsible.
School anxiety has risen by over 50% since 2020.
Anxiety related school absence is higher in learners with SEND.
Undiagnosed needs often initially present as anxieties around school.
And, importantly,

anxiety around learning doesn’t define your child.
And, with the right support, it can be healed.

For learners who find it difficult to extend their sentences, this is a really fun way to practice and model adding adjectives, adverbs and connectives to increase the detail in their writing.

Hi, I’m Hannah, I’m an ex-special school teacher and now run a business providing holistic, tailored and neurodiversity affirming tuition for children with SEND.
Ahead of the start of the next school year I wanted to answer few frequently asked questions -

1. Can you tutor my pre-verbal or non-verbal child?
Yes! Many of our tutors have experience working with pre or non verbal learners, whatever age or learning stage they’re working at

2. My child won’t be able to sit still at a desk. Can I still get a tutor for them?
Yes! Lots of our learners learn best through play based, active learning, and the beauty of 1:1 learning is we can tailor everything around what works for them

3. What age range can you tutor?
We have specialists right from the early years to adulthood, so whether you’re looking for support with early literacy, numeracy and communication, or for subject specific tuition to support your child to achieve GCSEs or Functional Skills qualifications, or anything in between, we’ll match you to the right tutor for your child

4. What sort of things can you support my child with?
Our tuition is all individually tailored, so it’s completely up to you what your tuition goals will be, whether that’s curriculum subjects, life skills, communication or something else

5. I’m not sure if my child will engage
Our relationship first approach means that we really get to know our learners, and our tutors are skilled at finding ways in to engagement for every child. We plan around their interests, use play and game based approaches, and for some learners provide options so that sessions can be child-led to help them feel that sense of control and ownership

If you’d like to find out more and chat about how we might be able to support your child, get in touch to arrange a free of charge phone call - then, if you decide it’s right for you we’ll match you with the tutor who best suits your child’s needs and your tuition goals.
I looking forward to speaking with you soon!

This phonics activity is a great way to practice recall of which words use which graphemes in the same sound family. Multi-sensory games and activities like these support over-learning, allowing information to embed into the long term memory.
