Here it is! Our Tiree Tope Shark expedition, captured in one short video. 🦈📹
This expedition truly embodies what grassroots branch diving is all about: people with a shared passion coming together, bringing different skill sets to the table for a shared goal. As the BSAC - British Sub-Aqua Club mission statement perfectly puts it, we dive "to learn about, enjoy, and protect the underwater world."
It was amazing to see everyone get involved—from families, juniors, and students, to time-served divers, snorkellers, and non-divers alike. It gave us all a real sense of diving with a purpose.
We were thrilled to engage with and learn from some fantastic organisations and researchers along the way. Thank you to everyone who took the time to chat with us:

And additional on-site support from Ethan, Finlay, Millie and Michael from University of Aberdeen
It was also fantastic to cross paths and share the water with marine researchers from Des Requins et Des Humains

The penultimate night of the Tiree Tope shark expedition! A very successful trip enjoyed by everyone—gin-clear seas, wildlife, sea life, training, camera deployments, and of course sharks! One more day of diving tomorrow. 🦈🤿

Mission success on Tiree Tope Shark!!! 🦈 We successfully filmed multiple elusive Tope sharks on our camera rigs yesterday evening.
After much planning, testing, and refining our setups, this is incredibly exciting news and a great reward for all the hard work everyone has put in.
We have the camera rigs underwater for another night, but with the weather changing over the next few days, this may have been our final chance to capture them!
It's rewarding to give something back to citizen science.

Day 3 of the Tiree Tope shark survey! 🦈
Hundreds of Tope sharks were spotted in the bay last night by Tash and Prof. James via their drone! Nothing on our cameras as of yet. We did discover two of our cameras had moved, so we have rigged them up differently.
Tonight we helped out by surveying the other bays of the island with our 4 drones, each choosing a different bay to see if Tope sharks were present there.
Aberdeen University arrived with much-needed air refills via their compressor. Good to see them, and Ethan who originally learnt with our club.
And we met the French scientific team on the beach again who invited Pam onto their boat to see their eDNA process.
Some more pleasure diving and training carried out as well. 👌

Day 2 of the Tiree Tope shark survey! 🦈🌊
We got straight to work assembling and deploying our underwater camera setups to try and capture some Tope shark footage. We will retrieve and review them tomorrow! We also took a couple of eDNA testing kits into the water to collect samples for the university. 🧬
It was a brilliant day for diver development, too. A massive shoutout to Jackie for completing her very first sea dive—and what a place to do it! Exceptionally clear water and great stuff to see. Jaene also got some crucial practice in with dive management, as well as O2 and defib setup. 🤿
To top it off, we were introduced to Armelle Jung from the French science survey team, and met even more locals who shared some fantastic local insight with us whilst we were out having dinner.
A great Day 2 all around!

Day 1 of Tiree Tope Shark survey! 🦈
Our first day was about meeting, planning, and testing. We met with Prof. James Thorburn and Tash Yates and got some updates about what they're up to and the Tope sharks, then headed out to test the location and our camera setup which threw up some surprises!
Tomorrow we will be deploying the cameras for real and getting some training in.

🌟 Huge Congratulations to Jackie! 🌟
Big congratulations to Jackie who has officially passed her Ocean Diver qualification! 🤿🌊
And she has done it just in time for the upcoming Tiree trip! Jackie and John have been fantastic regulars at the club for a while now, and it’s brilliant news that they are now both fully qualified for the open water.
Well done, Jackie 👏

A massive congratulations to Sammy, who has just passed her PIE (Practical Instructor Exam) which she took at Capernwray! 🤿🎉
As anyone in the club will know, Sammy is a constant presence, instructing most weeks which takes a lot of dedication so this news is especially great.
The PIE qualification allows an instructor to independently teach and sign students off in open water.
Well done, Sammy! 👏💪
