🍂 Sycamore Stew for Gruffalo Granny! 🥣🌳

We’ve loved watching the sycamore “helicopters” twirling down from the trees and collecting the autumn treasures they leave behind.

This week, they became the perfect ingredient for our newly vegetarian Gruffalo Granny! The children got busy collecting, counting, mixing and stirring up a delicious imaginary stew. 🍁🥄

Why not have a go at home? On your next autumn walk, collect fallen leaves, conkers, acorns, pinecones or twigs and let your child’s imagination take over!

🍁 Count and sort your treasures
🥄 Make a pretend soup, potion or Gruffalo feast
🌰 Explore different colours, shapes and textures
🗣️ Make up a recipe or story together
🍂 Create patterns or autumn pictures

Simple nature play can spark so much language, maths, creativity and curiosity — all from the treasures we find on the ground. ✨

💕 October marks the start of Selective Mutism Awareness Month 💕

Something that is incredibly close to our family’s hearts.

Five years ago, here we were in our matching T-shirts, raising awareness for something we were still learning so much about ourselves. 💕

We were incredibly lucky that our little girl had a practitioner who had knowledge of Selective Mutism and was able to recognise the signs early. Early intervention really does matter.

We’ve also been so fortunate to have people around her who have taken the time to listen, learn and understand — people who have supported her without pressure and helped her feel safe and confident in her own time. That understanding has meant more than they probably realise. 💗

Selective Mutism is not just shyness. It is a severe anxiety disorder. A child may be happy, confident and chatty at home, yet genuinely unable to speak in other situations, such as nursery or school.

So this October, especially to all our nursery parents, please take a little time to learn about Selective Mutism and recognise the signs. That quiet little one who seems “just shy” may be struggling with something much bigger.

A little awareness, patience and understanding can make the biggest difference. 💕

Please learn the signs. Please don’t dismiss it as shyness. And please know that early support matters.

At Happy Kids, we love celebrating and exploring the changing seasons! 🌿☀️🍂❄️

Noticing changes in the world around us supports the EYFS area of Understanding the World, helping children develop their curiosity and learn more about nature and their environment.

You may notice your child exploring signs of the season at nursery — looking at leaves, noticing changes in the weather, discovering seasonal colours and talking about what they can see, hear and feel. 🍃

You can continue the learning at home too! On your next walk, why not encourage your little one to look for signs of the season and talk about what they notice? 👀🌳

🌱🍅 Growing, exploring and learning at Happy Kids Thrybergh! 🥕🍓

Our pre-schoolers have loved spending time in our vegetable patch, picking fresh tomatoes and chatting about all the different fruits and vegetables we can grow. 🌿

Growing your own food is such a lovely way for children to learn about where food comes from, experience nature first-hand and, of course, enjoy the excitement of picking something they’ve helped to grow! 🍅✨

And you don’t need a big garden to give it a go at home. A sunny windowsill, balcony, doorstep or a few pots can be enough! 🪴

Why not try growing:
🍓 Strawberries in a pot or hanging basket
🌿 Herbs such as basil, mint or chives on a windowsill
🥬 Lettuce and salad leaves in containers
🍅 Cherry tomatoes in a sunny pot
🌱 Cress on the windowsill – perfect for little hands and quick to grow
🥕 Baby carrots or radishes in a deeper container

It’s a wonderful activity to enjoy together – planting, watering, watching and waiting for something delicious to grow. 💚

We’re looking for a practical, resourceful and friendly Maintenance Operative to help us care for our beautiful nursery environments.

This could be perfect for someone with experience in general maintenance, property maintenance, facilities, joinery, plumbing, decorating, construction or simply great all-round DIY skills.

🌈 Parachute fun! 🌈

Last week, our Happy Kids at Happy Kids Thrybergh 🩷🩵 had so much fun playing with the parachute! 😊

We lifted it up high, raced underneath, made colourful waves and worked together to keep it moving. There were lots of smiles and plenty of laughter along the way! 💛

As well as being great fun, parachute play is a wonderful way for our little ones to develop teamwork, coordination and listening skills through play.

We can’t wait for more parachute adventures! 🌈✨

Congratulations to Megan and team Thurcroft for the amazing work they've been putting in behind the scenes preparing to welcome our littlest Happy Kids!

We’re so excited to meet all of our new babies and families next week and officially welcome them into our Happy Kids family.

We’ve put so much thought, care and love into creating our new baby provision. We wanted it to feel like a home away from home — a calm, cosy and nurturing space where our babies can feel safe, secure and loved while they grow, explore and discover the world around them. 🌿✨

In my 40s and I’ve still bought myself the Gruffalo Granny book! 🩷🩵

Exciting new updates for 🩷🩵Happy Kids Thurcroft 🩷🩵

We’re so excited to share that our baby provision will be opening in mid-September! 🌿

We can’t wait to welcome our youngest little ones into the Happy Kids family. Although our baby provision will be based at a separate location in Thurcroft, our babies will remain very much part of the Happy Kids family, with the same nurturing approach, care and values that families know and love.

We’re so excited to begin this new chapter and can’t wait to welcome our little ones through the door! 🤍
