🐻🐻🐻F1 - Key Text Goldilocks and The Three Bears🐻🐻🐻
This half term one of our key text has been the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears. The children have listened to adults reading lots of different versions of the story. The children have been developing their own story skills by using the puppets to retell the story with their friends. Adults have also modelled writing by writing down children's words as they retell the story; this helps children to begin to understand that writing represents the words we say.
The children have learned lots of words to help them describe the different sizes of the bears e.g. big, large, enormous, massive, gargantuan, huge. The children have also started to use these words to compare e.g. smallest, largest.
Children have been making their own porridge at the tactile table and in the mud kitchen. They have used recipe books and written down their own recipes helping them to understand that writing has a purpose. Through this play children learn descriptive vocabulary such as dusty, wet, soggy, sloppy, gooey, lumpy.
Children have used atelier materials to retell the story. The provision of open ended resources allows children freedom to create representations of the story or the characters and to change these easily to make something else.
The children have been building models in the workshop of the cottage in the woods, choosing shapes for a purpose and making comparisons to their own homes. They have also began building chairs for the bears in the woodwork area, learning a range of techniques such as sawing, hammering, drilling and lashing using string and wool.
Today we had porridge at the fire pit…it was just right!
At home - why not try making porridge with your child and talk about how the oats change once you add the milk OR play a size hunt e.g. encourage your child to find a small pair of trousers, a medium sized pair or large pair.
