A little bit about us. What we did. We practice traditional Karate and also sport karate. The difference comes predominately in the fighting style.
Due To unforeseen circumstances, we are no longer trading
Established in 1999-2020 Rotherham Martial Arts centre was a fully equipped dojo in the heart of Rotherham town centre run by Sensei John Ball (7th Dan) Established for 16 years Rotherham Martial Arts centre was a fully equipped dojo in the heart of Rotherham town centre run by Sensei John Ball (6th Dan) who had over 39 years experience i
n martial arts. Here at Rotherham Martial Arts Centre we practice the Wado Ryu style of karate which is now considered one of the original mixed martial arts that takes elements from traditional Okinawan karate and jujitsu, it was developed by Master Hironori Ohtsuka in the 1920s. Sport karate is based around competition fighting which for under 14s is non contact it’s all about the techniques. Whereas traditional karate is about self defence and learning how to protect yourself. As well as fighting we also do kata, something that is unique to karate. Kata is a set sequence of fighting techniques used against an invisible opponent, so every move you do has an application in a real life situation, which in Japanese is known as Bunkai. Kata is used as part of the grading process, so they get progressively more complex. They are also are competed in competitions. In addition to Kumite (fighting) and Kata we also cover self protection, and grappling (ground fighting) which teaches students how to defend themselves if they are taken off their feet and we work on fitness. We offer classes for all ages 4 and above, students aged under 7 must have a parent present at all times during lessons. Training times:
Saturday:
Available if enough students willing to attend, and for grading practice.
09:00 – 10:00
Why should my child start karate? Karate aids concentration, to be able to focus properly, co-ordination and balance, and to be more positive. It all builds confidence and teaches them discipline in a fun way and to have respect towards others. Karate teaches self protection and not to take unnecessary risks and keeps them fit. Why choose Rotherham Martial Arts Centre? Our Do-jo (training area) is the best equipped in the area. It is fully matted and has a full length mirror wall to aid with the training of techniques, we have various punch bags, skipping ropes, bosu balls to aid balance, gym and medicine balls ect. We are a part of The Shindo Kai Karate Association which hold regular Kata, Kumite (fighting) and officials courses to help enhance the knowledge of our students. As well as courses being part of Shindo Kai presents the opportunity for our student to compete in local, national and international competitions, and the chance of being selected for the Kata and Kumite squads within the association, which in turn opens up the opportunity, with dedication and hard work, the chance to be selected to represent England. We are all fully insured with Sports coach UK, CBR checked and First Aid qualified. Our chief instructor and proprietor Sensei John Ball (6th Dan) has over 39 years experience and is a qualified coach with The World Karate Federation, The English Karate Federation, The Shindo Kai Karate association, and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. Qualified Male and Female instructors in all classes
The Do-jo is in a town center location for easy access, within a five minute walk of the bus or train station and forge island car park (old Tesco car park). On street parking opposite the Do-jo is available but limited. Private one on one tuition is also available, please contact for further details, prices and availability
