Women in Construction Week, story 2 of 6.
Meet Kerry Geoghegan, who came to us after redundancy and chose our Department for Education funded Thermal Wall Installation with Carpentry Skills Bootcamp as a practical route into the industry after taking the Introduction to Construction Course at our Doncaster Skills Academy.

Kerry summed it up perfectly: “This course gave me the confidence and know-how to go self-employed.”

From day one she felt supported with guidance, information and PPE, and she especially valued learning core carpentry skills including tool use and maintenance.

Since completing the programme, Kerry has taken confident steps into self-employment, supported by extra IAG including digital marketing guidance and even help creating a logo.

Women in Construction Week, story 1 of 6.
Meet Andrea Allpress. After spotting our course at the Job Centre, Andrea took the leap into construction, gained her CSCS card, discovered a real passion for the industry, and went on to complete our Skills Bootcamp in Bricklaying (DfE funded).

Since training, Andrea’s career momentum has been incredible:
Site Assistant (internship) → Site Administrator → Mobilisation Administrator → Commercial Assistant → Trainee Quantity Surveyor → Contract Administrator → Commercial Administrator (Barratt Developments).

Andrea put it best: “My transition into construction gave me a space where my skills were valued and my confidence could grow.”

If you’re thinking about a career change, let this be your nudge. Construction needs talent, not stereotypes.

On Tuesday, Jordan Langley (Employer Engagement Officer, Rotherham Skills Academy) and Michelle Reece (Head of Marketing & Communications, Skills People Group) visited Heath House, a brand-new private build site with the Vaughandale Construction team - Martin Heartfield (Marketing & Business Development), Mark Ross (Contracts Manager), Richard C, Senior Site Manager, and their photographer, Lee Panton - alongside Carrie Sudbury (Chief Executive, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce).

This site visit marks the start of an exciting new partnership with Vaughandale Construction Ltd, creating real opportunities for a select group of our learners to gain hands-on experience on upcoming projects, working alongside experienced construction professionals and the wider project team.

And the purpose behind this build makes it even more powerful. Heath House is being developed as an adapted home to support a gentleman with additional needs, helping create a space designed around independence, comfort and long-term wellbeing.

This is what great social value looks like when it’s done properly:
✅ Employers investing in future talent
✅ Learners gaining meaningful, site-based experience
✅ Partners backing local progression routes
✅ Communities benefiting from thoughtful, inclusive builds

We captured the project at its very beginning and we’ll be returning in six months to document the progress and the impact this collaboration is creating on site and beyond.

This video gives an insight into what this collaboration is working to achieve. 👇

👏 Huge thanks to Vaughandale Construction Ltd, Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, and everyone involved in making this partnership happen.

⚽🦺 @𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗖 𝘃 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗽 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲!

A few weeks ago we brought two worlds together and honestly… it just worked.

On one side: Sheffield United players stepping into PPE and taking on real hands-on construction tasks at Rotherham Skills Academy.

On the other: our team and learners bringing that match-day energy into a fun, fast-paced skills challenge (bricks included 😅).

What stood out most wasn’t just the competitiveness (there was plenty of that)… it was the shared mindset: teamwork, communication, discipline, resilience, and backing each other when something feels new and unfamiliar.

The same qualities that matter on the pitch matter on site too.

🎥 The video says it better than we can, have a watch for a proper snapshot of the day.

Huge thanks to:
👏 Hydra Creative Limited for capturing the day brilliantly
🤝 The Sheffield United Football Club communications team for being such a fantastic partner throughout
⭐ The players for throwing themselves into the challenge and making it such a positive experience for everyone involved
⭐ And of course the Rotherham Skills Academy team!

Safety boots, plastering tools, and a forensic style suit… yesterday at Rotherham Skills Academy was something else 😄

We hosted a 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗦𝘄𝗮𝗽 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 with Sheffield United Football Club's first team players (where the academy turned into a football training zone meets construction site), and it genuinely was brilliant, funny and enjoyed by everyone.

A huge thank you to 𝗦𝗨𝗙𝗖 and the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 who got fully stuck in:
⚽ 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮
⚽ 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀
⚽ 𝗙𝗲𝗺𝗶 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗸𝗶
⚽ 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗰𝗸

They were brilliant with our learners and got involved in everything with a great attitude (even when the challenges got… interesting 😄).

Big shout out as well to our learners (you were stars), Steve Cressey, Head of Academies and spokesperson, the RSA team: Chris Hulll, Chris Dalling, plus everyone else involved. And of course, the Hydra Creative team for capturing it all.

🎥 Our external videography team is pulling the full footage together now, and we’ll be sharing the results and video next week. For now, here’s a little teaser from the day, but we're not giving much away...

As proud partners of Sheffield United FC, days like this are a great reminder of what strong partnerships can create, for players, learners, and the community. 💛
