Our very own Marijke Walters has been invited again to BBC radio Sheffield after her star performances a couple of weeks ago. She told all of South Yorkshire and Derbyshire all about dyscalculia then and they loved her enthusiasm (and let’s face it, ability to talk) so much that today she is a guest on their bottomless brunch’ programme!!! She’ll get maths and dyscalculia in there somewhere 🥰

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m002v828/breakfast-18042026 watch this episode from 15:43 onwards!!!
With Cat Eadle, co-founder of the dyscalculia network, on the sofa and our own Marijke Walters in the short video on Lucy, Ava and Emily's dyscalculia 🥰. Dyscalculia is 30 years behind dyslexia in recognition and research... let's get it much higher on the priority list!!!
JUST AMAZING!!!! Cat Eadle, co-founder of the Dyscalculia Network has been on BBC breakfast TV!!! And they showed the piece in which our own dyscalculia assessor and teacher Marijke Walters was involved!
Hopefully now dyscalculia will get a bit more attention in schools and with the policy makers🤞
Dyscalculia on the Telly!!!!
Yesterday our Level 7 dyscalculia assessor Marijke Walters featured in a piece on dyscalculia on BBC Look North.

Ever wondered what a dyscalculia assessment actually looks like?
Many people imagine a quiet room, a test paper, and someone working through questions in silence.
That couldn’t be further from reality.
It is not about “passing a test”. It is about understanding how someone thinks, processes and experiences maths.
There is discussion. There is exploration. There are pauses, prompts and adaptations. Marijke is observing not just answers, but strategies, hesitations, working memory load, confidence, and how the learner responds to different types of input.
A good assessment is not about catching someone out. It is about building a detailed picture of strengths and the barriers someone may be facing.
For many of the learners we support, this is the first time someone has truly taken the time to understand their maths experience.
And that understanding is what leads to the right support, the right teaching approach, and often, a real shift in confidence.

Dyscalculia is finally getting attention in Parliament 💪.
A new scientific briefing from the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology highlights dyscalculia as a neurodevelopmental learning difficulty that affects around 6 percent of the population. That is roughly one child in every classroom.
Despite this, dyscalculia is still far less recognised than dyslexia. In England it is not even recorded separately in national SEND statistics and is often grouped together under the broad category of Specific Learning Difficulties.
The report highlights the need for better awareness, improved teacher training and earlier identification of learners with dyscalculia.
For many children and adults who have struggled with maths for years without understanding why, recognition of dyscalculia can make a huge difference. Mathematical difficulties are often misunderstood as lack of effort or ability, when they may reflect a specific difficulty with number learning.
As a specialist dyscalculia assessor and teacher, I see first hand how important accurate identification and appropriate support can be.
It is encouraging to see dyscalculia being discussed at national policy level. Greater awareness is an important step towards better support for learners who struggle with maths.
