Dear Parents and Carers,

This is just a reminder of how we are following guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) to ensure all children remain safe and comfortable during periods of heat.

What counts as “hot weather”?

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Met Office issue Heat-Health Alerts to guide schools. These are:
Yellow Alert – Some risk to vulnerable individuals
Amber Alert – Risk to the wider population
Red Alert – Significant risk to everyone

We monitor these alerts closely and adjust our approach as needed.

Our approach in school

Following national guidance, we are taking the following steps:
Keeping children cool
Classrooms are ventilated by opening windows and doors where possible
Blinds/curtains are used to reduce heat while maintaining airflow
We minimise use of equipment that generates heat

Hydration

Children are encouraged to drink water regularly
Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle each day

Uniform

We will relax uniform expectations during hot weather to help children stay comfortable
Children are encouraged to wear light, loose clothing
Hats are recommended for outdoor play

Sun safety

Children are encouraged to stay in shaded areas when outside
Please apply sunscreen before school; children may bring their own (named) sunscreen if needed

Activities

We avoid vigorous physical activity during the hottest parts of the day
Lessons may be adapted to include quieter, indoor activities

Health and safety

Staff are vigilant for signs of heat-related illness such as tiredness, dizziness, headaches, or excessive sweating. If needed, we will take immediate action and contact parents or medical services.

Thank you everyone have a great day.

Free school meals – Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council 06/05/2026

Good evening everyone,

I would like to remind families that they may be entitled to Free School Meals (FSM), which can provide valuable support at no cost to you.

Your child may be eligible if you receive certain benefits, including Universal Credit or other qualifying support. Applying is simple and can be completed online via the local authority website.

Even if your child chooses to bring a packed lunch or receives universal free meals (F2 to Year 2), registering for FSM is still important, as it helps the school access additional funding to support pupils.

We encourage all families who think they may be eligible to apply.
