Last week our Equity & Diversity champion Molly from the Nest room created a week to celebrate Lunar New Year 2026 🎎

Throughout the week the children in all rooms were invited to partake in activities to celebrate and learn about Lunar year ✨️

On Monday – Maths activity – the children were invited to make their our own money envelopes (Hongbao) and put coins into their envelopes using maths skills to count the amount they need. Hongbao is given out to symbolize good luck, prosperity and the warding off of evil spirits.

On Tuesday – Children had opportunity to taste some of different foods that are eaten during Lunar New Year. For example Spring rolls and dumplings symbolizing wealth, longevity noodles and prawn crackers and have a go at using chop sticks.

On Wednesday – Children had a go at creating their own paper dragon or dragon mask and take part in a group dragon dance.

On Thursday – Children had the opportunity to explore Lunar New Year tuff trays that include mark making and sensory exploration.

And on Friday – Children had the opportunity to decorate their own Lunar New year lantern to hang up around the room. The lantern festival marks the end of celebrations and happens on the first full moon.

The children showed great excitement and curiosity as they learned about Lunar New Year.

And just like that, we’ve reached the last week of January at Fledglings! Despite the dull and rainy weather, the children have continued to enjoy learning and exploring outdoors. 🌧️

We have welcomed new babies who have settled in wonderfully and discovering awe and wonder through the activities on offer and forming relationships with peers and key persons.

Across the nursery the children have been building friendships and learning together through play.

I wonder what February will bring?

Our third week at Fledglings and another great week was had! We ended the wellbeing week with:

Feelgood Friday!

The children were invited to wear their comfiest clothes, bring in a favourite book, and enjoy sharing stories together.

Children also enjoyed a special treat of milkshakes and biscuits, creating a warm, happy atmosphere that supports wellbeing by promoting comfort, calmness, social bonding, and a sense of security. πŸ§ΈπŸ“–πŸ₯›πŸͺ

Aswell as the children enjoying wellbeing week the children have been busy in between from exploring and investigating wonderful activity set ups from sensory lights to finding animals in the box to garden play and scooping and pouring with pasta to baking, to the preschool room preparing the garden to create a new space to grow fruit and vegetables! We have been busy!

The sky room are very excited to create their new garden patch and have been working very hard together to achieve this! Watch this space πŸ“πŸπŸ₯’πŸ₯•πŸ«œ

At Fledglings we believe that wellbeing is the key that unlocks everything else. Ensuring children feel safe, nurtured and have their needs met allows them to explore and learn effectively. At Fledglings, Children take part in β€˜cosy and warm’ time every session, where they get comfortable and listen to music and stories. Key workers embed wellbeing into the daily planning of the invitations to play that they create for the children.

Emma our Senior baby room leader is also the mental health and wellbeing champion for the nursery and has planned activities for all the children to enjoy taking place this week starting with:

Mindful Monday

Using playdough, children will explore emotions through sensory play as children squish and shape through playdough they will explore feelings through touch, play, and creativity, building early emotional understanding. 😊

Look out for tommorow's wellbeing activity 🎢
