Happy New Year everyone!

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed maternity leave and am looking forward to seeing my tutees again.

🪴 We’ve been building planters this week! 🪴

☀️ My tutees have helped me (virtually) to:

- measure and cut accurately - so as not to waste wood! 🪚
- convert between cm and m 📏
- calculate area and perimeter ✏️
- calculate volume - so I know how much soil I’ll need! 🌱
- calculate surface area - so I know how much wood stain I’ll need! 🎨
- calculate how much each planter costs to make 😅

So much maths involved! ➕➖➗✖️

How close can you get to 998? 🤔

⏱ COUNTDOWN! ⏱

Countdown is a great game to get the brain 🧠 warmed up for maths and English.

There are so many ways to adapt the game to focus on different skills. ➕➖➗✖️

You can make your own game up or there are plenty of online number/letter generators too.

One of my tutees decided to challenge herself by choosing only numbers below 10 to get as close to 998 as she could.

Is it possible to get 998 exactly?

Can you think of a 4 letter word beginning with C..? 🙃

My Nan was chatting to me about a game show she was enjoying called Lingo. As always, my mind drifted to all the great learning opportunities it sounded like it had to offer! 🤣 I found an app for my iPad and discovered that I enjoy playing it too! 🤓💡

It’s a really simple game but allows for lots of discussion about vowels, consonants, spellings and how letter sounds change when paired with different letters. The game can easily be adapted with up to 7 letter words so is a great way to build vocabulary too - when given few hints along the way!🆒

(The word was CAKE btw 😉)

💐Spring has sprung! 💐

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been busy (with lots of help from my mum!) clearing and weeding the allotment ready for planting! 🪱 I came across a couple of parsnips I’d completely forgotten about and was pretty impressed with the size of them! So impressed, in fact, I decided to show off to my tutees and use them in maths! (I managed to squeeze in addition, subtraction, multiplying, converting units, fractions and decimals😃👍🏻) The types of questions and numbers can be easily adapted depending on the skill we’re working on.

I’ve also starting planting seeds and so thought I’d include them in the problem solving too! 🌱

NB: not all measurements were 100% accurate 😉🤣

I can’t quite believe it - a whole year of online tutoring! 💻

This year has been a huge learning curve for everybody, and I have to say how impressed I’ve been with all my tutees - their ability to adapt to this ever changing world has been amazing, and I’ve loved learning alongside them.

I may have been quiet on here recently, but I’ve been busier than ever with tutoring and adapting to working online. 👩🏼‍💻

I thought I’d make up for lost time and, over the next couple of weeks, share some of things we’ve been learning this past year.

I thought I’d put together a few ideas and free games/websites you may wish to try with your children - after the initial excitement of being off school wears off!

Something that I find often doesn’t get the time it needs in school is measure, so now would be a great time to:

-🥖look up recipes and make bread dough, pizza dough, play dough, cakes, biscuits - anything that calls for following recipes!
- 📖scale the recipes up or down depending on how much you’d need (How much will I need if I only want half? Double? Enough for 6 people etc)
- ⚖️convert recipes from grams to kilograms, ounces to pounds etc (you can use online converters if needed and see if children can see patterns)
- 📏measure things! (How much bigger? Smaller? Will the table fit in this space if we rearranged the furniture? etc)
- ⏰Time!! (How long until? How long is the film in minutes? Hours? How long will it take you to...clean your room? How many star jumps can you do in 1 minute? How many would that be in 30 seconds? Etc)

Websites I find particularly useful include:

⭐️Hit the Button - times tables, division, numberbonds, square numbers (Free on the website or the app is £2.99)

⭐️Www.mathsframe.co.uk - lots of free games (£10 subscription for full access but plenty available for free)

⭐️Www.spellingframe.co.uk - brilliant website with all spellings for each year group clearly labelled. All activities are free and really interactive but it’s £10 for the games (One year subscription).

⭐️Www.topmarks.co.uk - plenty of games for maths and English (some games don’t work on iPads ☹️)

⭐️www.classroomsecrets.co.uk - they have released some great free home learning packs for each year group 👍🏻

⭐️⭐️⭐️Www.twinkl.co.uk - this is a brilliant resource and they currently have completely free access with the code PARENTSTWINKLHELPS everything is sectioned into year groups and you will find everything you need - colouring, games, tests, ppt explanations etc 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

- they have free home learning packs for each year group and have KS3 resources too 👍🏻

🏆Don’t feel like children have to just do things from their year group - start them off on the year below if you’d like so they can consolidate and perhaps find it a bit easy to begin with. Don’t feel like you need to be teaching them new stuff!

🎨If in doubt, get the cereal boxes out! Set them challenges! ...you’ve got 30 minutes, the person with the most interesting cereal box creation gets to choose the next film! 🎬

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the summer holidays ☀️ and am pleased to say there’s been no ‘end of the holiday blues‘ as I’m so excited to begin tutoring on a full time basis this year 😄

🚐Whilst on my travels, I’ve been taking photographs of interesting objects, structures and animals to support my tutees’ questioning, inference and creative writing skills. 🎨🖌

I’ve also spent time researching dyslexia in more detail. Having taught for 8 years with no specific training in dyslexia, I’ve picked up information and stratagies here and there but have often felt confused as to what a child really needs due to varying ways in which dyslexia can present itself.

Completing this simple course has given me a greater awareness of the difficulties children face within our education system, the different types of dyslexia and a wide range of strategies I can use to support them - I would highly recommend visiting Nessy.com for more information.

Finally got to try out my new iPad pencil ✏️ - I love it!

It’s a thumbs up from my tutees too 👍🏻 - It’s amazing how exciting writing and spelling can be when you can do it on a screen!
