What makes a school-ready child? School-readiness and school success are more than just having acquired a set of facts and skills. They require a “secret ingredient” — social-emotional skills.

I love this ❤️ And I totally agree 💯

I was planning constantly.
Setting up activities.
Filling tables.
Making sure every moment of the day had something ready.

And yet…
Something didn’t feel right.

The moment I stopped overplanning, everything changed.

I remember my headteacher walking into the classroom.
Looking around. Pausing.

There were barely any tables…
and the ones we had? Empty.

“What are the children going to do?!” she asked, concerned.

“They’re going to choose,” I said.

Here’s the shift that changed everything:

Having less out didn’t mean I was lazy.
It didn’t mean I’d run out of ideas.
It didn’t mean I cared less.

It meant I finally understood this:

👉 The more I put out… the more distracted the children became.
👉 The more I planned… the less the children led.

They flitted.
They skimmed.
They moved from one thing to the next without depth.

Because everything had already been decided for them.

And this isn’t your fault.

We’ve been conditioned to believe that good practice looks like full tables, constant provision, and beautifully set invitations to play.

Of course we overplan.
We’ve been taught to.

But children don’t need their whole day pre-filled.

They need space to:

✨ follow their own ideas
✨ return to familiar resources
✨ become deeply absorbed in play
✨ discover what truly interests them

Because that’s where the real magic of learning unfolds.

So what’s the shift?

Strip it back.

Create strong, simple continuous provision.
Offer open-ended resources.
Step back enough for children to step forward.

Let the play belong to them.

Because when you stop overplanning…
you don’t lose control.

You make space for what really matters.

And if you’re exhausted trying to hold everything together right now…

please hear this:

It doesn’t have to stay this hard.

But if nothing changes, next term could feel exactly the same.

The same overwhelm.
The same pressure.
The same exhaustion.

🌿 That’s exactly why I created my free training — to show you the 3 Scandinavian shifts that transformed my practice and helped me build a calmer, more connected way of teaching.

Doors are open now — but not for long.

Why Slow Pedagogy Matters More Than Ever

In a world that seems to be moving faster every day, it's easy for early childhood settings to become caught up in routines, schedules, transitions, documentation requirements and the pressure to always be doing more.

What if children need more time to wonder, to play, to connect, to revisit ideas and to simply be?

Slow pedagogy is not about doing less. It's about being more intentional with our time, relationships and decision-making. It's about creating space for deep learning, meaningful interactions and genuine wellbeing for both children and educators. Slowing down has a wonderful effect on educator wellbeing too!

It also has strong connections to trauma-informed practice. When we slow down, we create opportunities to build secure relationships, respond to children's individual needs, reduce unnecessary stress and provide the predictability and emotional safety that many children need to thrive. Rather than rushing children through the day, Slow Pedagogy encourages us to notice, listen and respond with greater sensitivity and care.

Now more than ever, we need to reflect on the pace of our days. As educators we can ask ourselves

- Are children being given enough time to become absorbed in their play? Like, deeply absorbed!

- Do our routines support or interrupt learning?

- Are we creating environments that foster calm and connection, especially during arrivals at the service?
Just think about if you have loud disco music playing on arrival. What message is that portraying to children in the early mornings.

What messages does the pace of our day send to children about what we value? What do our practices demonstrate to children? What about our environments?

Sometimes slowing down isn't about having more time, It's about using the time we have differently. In the end, we all have the same amount of time in the day, it's about what values the individual services and educators hold. And remember Slow Pedagogy will look different in different services, as our community context matter!

Do you think early childhood education has become too rushed? Do you think childhood itself has become too rushed?

Another reason why you childminders are so wonderful! Justina's research identified the close and affective relationships you build with families and how those relationships enable responsive, personalised care.

Read more about what the research showed, including some real examples from the study, and what this means for you in the full research brief here:

If you didn't know, Justina Chen is the fabulous UCL student we partnered with on a research project last year.
