Last days of summer...the Nursery is open 11am to 5pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week and then closed for the 2026 season.

It definitely feels like autumn is on the way!
The grasses are performing well and it is lovely to see some blue sky but the nights are drawing in and it is cool. The Nursery is open today and Saturday, and then Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week, 11am - 5pm. From September visits are by appointment only.

Well it's been very wet today, which has made me so grateful for my polytunnel and greenhouse. Crops have been mostly good in both, despite one polytunnel being out of action for veg until mid-July. This year I went for Uchiki Kuri squash and am pleased with the results considering they didn't get as much room as they wanted. I have also tried 3 varieties of smaller aubergines and have been enjoying good crops on them all, this one is Violet King. I definitely plan to be offering the same varieties next year 😊

Watering hasn't been such an issue here in bonny Scotland this summer, rather lack of sunshine! However if you find watering pots increasingly problematic, but still enjoy having pots of flowers, then thinking about plants which will tolerate less watering is a good idea. Frequently I get asked about plants suitable for pots at holiday homes and obviously watering can be an issue here. It also allows you to play with plants which might not suit your garden or survive the winter unprotected. Certainly compared to bedding plants, which can be very thirsty, these tough perennials are worth considering and when grouped together can give a long lasting display 🙂
We are now in August and the Nursery remains open Thursday - Saturday 11am - 5pm, however there will be days when it is closed due to family commitments. I will post closures, and then the Nursery season will conclude on 29th August with any sales thereafter by appointment only. We've already had some cool nights at the Nursery and I am noticing that the plants are beginning to mark the change towards autumn.

Lovely to see a garden setting the stage at a major sporting event.
Even better to hear that it will be planted somewhere after the Games finish, and with many of the plants of the style that I champion in my Nursery I will be interested to see it.

The sun has finally brought out the flowers 😀
It's difficult photographing the flowers in the Nursery, and the colour saturation is high because of the sun, but a little collection in one corner gives an idea of what's finally happening.
And the grasses are yet to perform at their best, so more to come, although they are even harder to photograph!

Finally, we did it!
Our 20 plus year old polytunnel cover had started to split and needed to be replaced. The snow last winter was the death knell, but this spring was too cold and windy to enable us to get on to do the job. With the prospect of warm sunshine it was the spur we needed to roll up our sleeves and tackle it. As with most gardening jobs preparation is the longest part, but very necessary. All the bottom rails had to be uncovered from 2 decades of soil and encroaching grass. The asparagus stood impervious as we took off the old cover and cleaned up the site. Then with the two ends replaced in sections the main cover slipped on perfectly 😃 clip on the 'S' hooks and it was done!
Our tomatoes had been too long in the other tunnel, but we have managed to move them across, prune them back and we can now see the ripening tomatoes!
This is an old Solartunnel, the original supplier had retired but we found a replacement supplier and thanks to Whitebird Polytunnels we now have a fully functioning polytunnel again.

As spring gives way to summer (we hope 😊) the border by the house is beginning to burst with many of my favourite perennials. Brunnera 'Hadspen Cream' elegantly lifts its foliage as the froth of forget-me-not blue flowers start to fade. It's companion, Geum 'Alabama Slammer' is a superb front of border plant. Polemonium 'Lambrook Mauve' will flower all summer long and obediently stay where it's put. The Verbascum phoeniceum 'Violetta' has grown tall this year, but never takes much room and the occasional seedling is very welcome. Briza media is at its best as it shimmers and trembles in front of Persicaria 'Hohe Tatra', with a Iris chrystographes flower just about to open. The promise of more to come is enticing at this time of year, just a little more sun and warmth please!
