Emergency Preparedness Series – Part 2

The Two-Minute Question

Your workplace has an AED.

That's great.

But have you ever stopped to ask...

Could it be reached quickly enough from every normal working area of your workplace?
The recently updated BS 8599-1:2019+A1:2026 has encouraged many organisations to review not only whether they have an AED, but also whether it can be accessed promptly as part of an effective emergency response.
This week's challenge is simple:

Walk from the furthest normal working area in your workplace to your AED.
Time how long it takes.
Think about anything that could delay you, such as:
• Locked doors
• Restricted access
• Poor signage
• Uncertainty about its location
Sometimes a simple walk around your workplace can identify improvements that could make a real difference when every second counts.

Have you ever carried out this exercise in your workplace? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Emergency preparedness isn't about having a first aid kit. It's about knowing what happens next.

If someone suffered a medical emergency in your workplace today, would everyone know what to do?

Not just your trained first aiders.
Everyone.
Think about it for a moment.
• Who would call 999?
• Who would collect the first aid kit?
• Who would retrieve the AED?
• Who would direct colleagues away from the scene?
• Who would meet the ambulance and guide them to the casualty?

Many organisations invest in first aid equipment but rarely discuss what actually happens when someone collapses.

Emergency preparedness is about far more than compliance.

It's about ensuring the right equipment is available, that it reflects the risks within your workplace, and that everyone understands their role during those critical first few minutes.

This week, ask your team one simple question:

"If someone collapsed right now, what would you do first?"

The discussion that follows could identify improvements that make a real difference when every second counts.

At Train2Protect, we believe preparation saves lives.
