This rare find was preserved in the aftermath of the fire as it was surrounded by building material that prevented moister and oxygen from coming into contact.

The tombstone of Victor, a moorish man from North Africa, can be found at Arbeia Roman fort in South Shields.

The inscription reads: “To the spirits of the departed (and) of Victor, a Moorish tribesman, aged 20, freedman of Numerianus, trooper of the First Cavalry Regiment of Asturians, who most devotedly conducted him to the tomb”

What do you think the relationship between the pair was?

Meet a Roman soldier who served the Empire 3100 miles away from his home.

Barates’ tombstone can be found at Coria, the Roman town at Corbridge!

Any idea what this artefact I spotted at a museum this week is?🤔Put your guesses in the comments👇🏼

Reconstruction of a centurion’s living quarters at a Roman fort in Arbeia, South Shields.

It might not look like much, but these apartments were significantly more spacious than the tiny chambers available to ordinary soldiers who often had to share rooms.

Although cramped, this apartment allowed the centurion to live alongside his family, as well as his slaves who would have slept in the same room as any children.

Arbeia, a Roman fort in South Shields, also has a reconstructed house belonging to a Commanding officer in the Roman imperial army which, in stark contrast to the military barracks, is vibrant, spacious and light.

Could you live here?

The white canons (priests who wore a distinctive white habit) lived at Easby Abbey in North Yorkshire for centuries.

The dormitory they slept in was initially open plan but was later modified to include room dividers for increased privacy.

The bathroom was located on a higher floor now lost. Waste dropped into a drainage channel below and was swept away into the river swale.

The abbey was closed during the dissolution of the monasteries ordered by King Henry VIII and left to ruin.

Archaeologists aren’t sure who the baby who was buried at Arbeia Roman fort was, but they believe the placement was due to religious or ritual practice.

My thoughts whilst exploring the ruins of a Roman fort at Corbridge

The strong room at Coria (Roman Corbridge) kept the soldiers wages safe during the Roman Empire
