Rivers are constantly reshaping our landscapes through erosion, flooding, sediment transport, braiding, and scour—dynamic processes that define environmental systems and infrastructure resilience.
At the intersection of environmental science and engineering, open channel flow experimentation allows these complex behaviours to be studied in controlled, repeatable conditions. Using laboratory flumes, we can observe:
• Sediment entrainment and deposition
• Riverbank erosion and channel migration
• Flood flow dynamics and overbank behaviour
• Braided channel formation and instability
• Localised scour and flow–structure interaction
At Armfield Limited, our hydraulic and environmental systems are designed to inspire innovation in water engineering and environmental research bridging real-world river processes with hands-on experimental learning.
These tools support the next generation of engineers in tackling challenges in flood management, river restoration, and sustainable water infrastructure design. Armfield.com

Phreatic Surface Response in a Confined Aquifer with a Central Well
How does groundwater respond to localized abstraction—and how can we visualise it in real time?
This experiment investigates phreatic surface movement within a confined aquifer, demonstrating how pumping from a central well induces drawdown and alters hydraulic gradients within a saturated porous medium.
Using the Armfield S12 Hydrology System, students and researchers can observe:
▪️ Groundwater flow dynamics under abstraction
▪️ Formation of a drawdown cone and changes in hydraulic head
▪️ Interactions between permeability, recharge, and flow distribution
🌍 From Laboratory to Field Application
These principles underpin critical challenges in water resource management, including aquifer depletion, well design, and sustainable groundwater extraction.
Beyond aquifer behaviour, the S12 enables exploration of:
▪️ Infiltration and recharge processes
▪️ Sediment transport and channel dynamics
▪️ Erosion and scour mechanisms
📊 The diagram illustrates phreatic surface movement in a confined aquifer with a central well, while the experimental setup demonstrates these effects in practice.
