Mat Chat β What to Do If You Get Lost
Over the next couple of weeks in class, we'll be talking about what to do if you get lost. With summer now in full swing, many families are enjoying holidays, beach trips, theme parks, shopping centres and days out with friends. While these are great opportunities to make memories, busy places can also increase the chance of children becoming separated from their parents or guardians.
Although it can be a frightening and stressful experience for everyone involved, knowing what to do can make all the difference. By talking through these simple safety tips at home and reinforcing them in class, we can help children feel more confident and prepared should they ever find themselves in this situation.
If you ever get lost:
* Stay where you are β Don't keep walking around looking for your parents. They will be looking for you too.
* Ask a safe adult for help β Look for a police officer, security guard, shop worker, lifeguard, or another parent with children.
* Know your information β Learn your full name and your parent or guardian's phone number if you're old enough.
* Have a meeting place β Before you go somewhere busy, agree on a place to meet if you get separated.
* Carry identification β Younger children can wear an ID wristband or carry a card with emergency contact details. Devices such as an AirTag can also help parents locate them, but they don't replace good safety habits.
* Don't go with strangers β Even if someone says they know your family, stay with a trusted adult such as a police officer, security guard or shop worker until your parent or guardian arrives.
