Why do people pay for piano lessons?

The answer is….they don’t pay for piano lessons. They pay for so much more.

- They pay for their child to learn what it takes to commit to something meaningful;

- They pay so that their child can learn the magic of creation, of forming something beautiful using their hands;

- They pay so that their child recognises the power of discipline, of working at something consistently, at least five days per week, honing their skills and building their fluency;

- They pay so that their child understands not to quit when the novelty has worn off and the work must set in;

- They pay so their child learns that they must still put in the work, even when tired and grumpy, not just giving up and spending hours on TikTok;

- They pay so that they can learn the joy of creating music with others: listening intently, and learning to chop, change and compromise;

- They pay so that they realise that it’s not just “enjoying themselves” but working meticulously on small details;

- They pay so that they DO enjoy themselves;

- They pay so that their child creates neural pathways that impact every single area of the curriculum;

- They pay so that their child develops the most incredible fine motor skills;

- They pay so that their child sees that art can be transcendent, and can accompany us through our darkest times;

- They pay because music puts us in touch with something that can’t be otherwise expressed.

I can’t even begin to imagine a world without my piano; it’s been there through thick and thin ; it is a solace and source of inspiration.

Paying for my piano lessons is one of the biggest “thankyous” that I owe my parents.

Contraversial post 😬; Starting lessons without something to practise on isn't advised 🫣.

Now I do understand- its more money and you've probably paid to for the lessons and the book...and children can change their mind! But these early weeks are crucial to developing practise routines at home. Its no fun for your child playing middle C for weeks because the recall of last lesson isnt there..

So - where to look on a REALLY tight budget;
1. Borrow one! A friend, family member or me!! I have a couple I can lend - you just need to ask! 🎹
2. Play at a relative/friends house..again free...but not ideal if they dont live round the corner..🏡
3. Second hand. The pic is my local FB findings. You could also try a carboot. 🚗
4. Buy new - the Keyboards I buy for my school are touch sensitive and very budget friendly (around £100) if you're looking for a Birthday or Christmas gift. Pop me a message and I'll gladly send you a link (I'm not an affiliate or anything-injust rate them and they're really robust!). 📲

Now these are all Keyboards - don't you need a REAL piano? Well a real one would be nice....but they are a big piece of furniture and most homes just don't have space or the conditions (very moderate temperature). And we don't live in a perfect world 🗺

Thinking about Piano Lessons? Here's a few things to think about;

1. What will you practise on? Piano (music) lessons require time and effort in between lessons. The more time you put in, the better your child will progress.

2. When will you practise? Before school/after school/the weekend... in the first instance, 10 minutes is plenty to recap what they learned in lessons. Ensure you piano/keyboard.

3. Where will you practise? Ideally somewhere quiet but visible with your instrument easily accessible.

4. Can you help? I always encourage parents to sit in lessons to begin as you can step in to support in these important early days. This gives you and your child a better experience of learning an instrument. Once they have the jist of it, they'll enjoy learning and playing independently and, in many cases, giving you kitchen concerts 🎶

Still smiling after a full day of school and a full night of lessons at home 🎹🎶
I do feel very lucky that I get such a wide range of pupils and teaching experiences.
Here's a lowdown of tonight's lessons;
🎹 E came hot off the Urdd stage this weekend! He competed with his Initial Grade exam piece against pupils up to 4 years older than him! Falch iawn! 🌟
🎹 J had his first run through of his Initial Grade exam programme, hes setting his sights high and aiming for a Distinction - meaning lots of practise over the holidays!
🎹 C came in a very happy lady having overcome a challenge which has been stumping her for the last two weeks with a few helpful videos, photos and lots of perseverance! Well done C! 👏
🎹 R is nearing the completion of his Grade 4 programme - he's got a new notebook to keep him focussed on the finishing touches to get him.the highest mark possible. The devil is always in the detail!
🎹 N continues to amaze me - as a year 13 pupil she is juggling lots of deadlines, she has a job, helps with gymnastics and STILL finds time to play piano for pleasure 🎶
🎹 Lovely to welcome new pupils G&G! Hopefully they have gone away happy with some lovely pieces to practise. The focus here is to build some key playing and reading skills so they can learn the music they love ❤️
🎤 A spot of singing with R to finish the day. She's an absolute ray of sunshine 🌞 and now need to memorise her words so we can plan the action and movement to her song "We're all made of stars"....which pretty much sums up how I feel about my evening 🌟

FAQ - When can they start Piano lessons?
As a general rule, I say school years 2-3 is ideal.
But I have taught children in year 1 who have made great progress, and children in year 6 who really fly with piano.
🎼 To the younger end of the scale, progress is slower and I use games and toys to engage in musical play to reinforce their learning - both playing AND reading the music.
🎼 With older students, the progress is much quicker BUT musical play is still an important part of their learning. If it's not fun, they won't enjoy it and as both a parent and teacher, I know this is a key part of learning and motivation.

Pic of Benji (reception class). He was singing a song from school and wanted to play it. We've used the dinosaurs to map the notes as it moves in jumps.
This is way beyond his playing ability (those fingers 🫣) but we enjoyed seeing the jumps as we sang his song and talked about the patterns (link ➡️maths).

Is he ready for piano lessons? No, not yet, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy playing 🎹
