I was truly saddened to read the latest report from the National Literacy Trust highlighting a decline in children reading for pleasure. As an educator, I see first-hand how vital reading is for children’s development – not just academically, but emotionally and socially, too.

Stories have the power to ignite imaginations, expand horizons, and offer young minds a safe space to explore the world beyond their immediate surroundings. Every child deserves that magical experience of getting lost in a good book. Let’s do what we can – as parents, teachers, and community members – to bring the joy of reading back into young lives.

📝 WJEC GCSE English Language resit reminder: Unit 2 exam is 1 week away! 📝

For everyone sitting the Unit 2 resit exam on 4th November 2024, here are the top 10 ways students lose marks in the B2 writing section. These tips come straight from the examiners’ reports – avoid these mistakes and give yourself the best shot at scoring high!

1. Basic grammar and punctuation mistakes – Small errors in tense, subject-verb agreement and punctuation can add up and affect your marks. Watch out for missing full stops, comma splices and mixed-up tenses.
2. Not fully answering the question – Tailor your response to the question given, not a pre-prepared answer. Writing off-topic or too vaguely can cost you easy marks.
3. Copying too much from the reading materials – Use Section A as inspiration, but add your own points and ideas. Showing originality will get you further than copying.
4. Using ‘fancy’ words that don’t fit – Words like ‘myriad’ and ‘plethora’ can sound awkward if they’re forced. Stick to words that fit naturally with what you’re saying.
5. Messy or unreadable handwriting – If it’s hard to read, the examiner can’t give you marks. Write clearly, with spaced words and easy-to-read letters.
6. Not planning your answer properly – Planning can help, but don’t overdo it. Let your ideas flow naturally rather than forcing in checklist words or punctuation.
7. Losing focus on the main topic – Stay on topic! In longer pieces, going off-track makes it harder for the examiner to follow your point.
8. Trying to cover too much instead of adding detail – Focusing on one event or idea lets you add more detail and makes your writing stronger. Don’t spread yourself too thin.
9. Writing in big chunks without paragraphs – Use paragraphs to break up your writing and make it easy to follow. Good organisation = better flow!
10. Focusing on writing more instead of writing better – Quality over quantity! It’s better to write clearly and check your work than to fill the page with rushed content.
