Postgraduate student Eliska Varilova always intended to create a dragon at some point during her time on MA Prosthetics Effects at Falmouth University and she saw her opportunity in study block 2!

This fabulous hand puppet with a mechanised jaw was a truly hybrid project with significant use of ZBrush in the creation the teeth, horns, and tongue. Cast in latex and PU foam, the main form was painted with PAX paints and the teeth and eyes painted with acrylic inks with a layer of UV resin added to the teeth.

Back to study block 2 of our master’s degree in Prosthetic Effects and a stunning H. R. Giger-inspired project by Jurine Erwee modelled by Guust Haerens.

Giger was best known for his ‘biomechanical’ style that blended human physiques with machines, and to honour this look, Jurine created 10 silicone prosthetics that were combined with bodypaint in the final application. The headdress alone took 10 weeks to complete!

Prosthetics and makeup FX rely on a huge variety of materials and equipment, so understanding how each one works - and how best to use it - is essential.

This lesson covers the basics about the different kinds of pottery and water-based clays. These are the most readily available sculpting mediums and are also essential for mould making. We'll walk through what to expect from these materials and what to watch out for when working with them.
