Build confidence in creating a dignified, calming space and adapt your approach to enhance your client's health and wellbeing. Hello,

I'm Nicolle a holistic massage therapist, trainer and speaker. I love teaching others how to combine touch interventions with compassionate communication to enable a person living with dementia enjoy massage on their terms. This is connection without words taking t

When I'm not massaging, training or sharing this passion you'll find me resting, playing, spending time with my loves or tending our young permaculture food forest in Cornwall. A yesterday ....
it was mum's birthday recently ... and my brother and sister managed to locate one of mum's favourite perfumes "O***m" from back in the day.
We sat in the sun and opened it, me hopeful that it would evoke a positive response, a little tentative in case it had the opposite effect.
I placed some on a tissue and wafted the YSL classic under her nose and her eyes widened, her face softened and she looked straight at me.
I asked if she'd like to wear a little and she intoned positively, so I dabbed some on her neck.
Next I played Rock With You by Michael Jacson which she used to totally freak out to in her disco days. I gently took her hands, so often pinned to her chest, and she allowed me to take her them and rock with her, doing a toned down version of bumps-a=daisying to the beat.
I'm always amazed at the ability of aromas unlocking memeories and enabling a moment of joy in the present.

This past week's favourite olfactory hug has a light refreshing summery feel:
palmarosa - clearing and refreshing
lemongrass - relaxing yet uplifting
yuzu - a lesser known citrus oil which I've fallen in love with - to address exhaustion and awaken your mind

Sometimes our load can feel heavy.
I love that Sam Dondi Smith wrote on his list of positive and enabling things we can do - PLAY!
Play is a way to lighten our load, make things more bearable and yes enable each other to tap into our joy.
I remember being passed on the affirmation, "keep it light" to help deal with endless stress and it is true in our roles as carers whether as loved ones or professionals. It really can smooth our journey when the timing is right .... and I must confess my timing hasn't always been great! ⏰❌😆
Sam's book is called Waiting for the Bus and has easy reference resources on how to support people living with dementia with dignity.
