It was the turn of the beetles and bugs this week in Small Wood, and we had a visit from a Hawthorn Shield Bug.
We created our own shield bugs from leaves and paper, lots of concentration to make each bug different. Then onto a woodland skill - sawing our own wood lice to craft our very own ladybird. 🐞

We all enjoyed taking part in one of our favourite stories "What the ladybird heard." Small Wood was quite noisy as we heard the plan! But the ladybird said not a word.

This week we found out about Dragonflies as we have been seeing a few around in our gardens and local fields.
Dragonflies are super-fast, colorful flying bugs that can hover in the air like tiny helicopters and fly backwards! They have six legs, huge eyes, and four clear wings, they are completely harmless to humans and cannot sting.

We crafted ours from 4 willow withies, don't they look amazing! 🤩

Yummy blackberries picked for our snack, thanks to Eve. 😋

After our caterpillar week we had to follow on with butterflies! 🦋
Look at all the beautiful butterflies we created using nature! Which one is your favourite?

We hope you all took part in the Big Butterfly Count. Lots of butterflies have been spotted walking to Small Wood - Painted Ladies, Red Admirals, Wall Browns, Speckled Wood to name a few but keep a look out for the Clouded Yellow as it’s looking like a Clouded Yellow Year! 💛

With its large strong wings, this golden yellow butterfly makes the journey across the channel to the UK for the summer. Usually just a few arrive, but sometimes there’s a bumper year, known as a 'clouded yellow year'.

It looks like the warm weather and southern winds have helped more clouded yellows visit this year. Winters are too cold for them to overwinter in the UK.

Fun in the woods this week discovering how amazing the life cycle of the butterfly is!
We made our own hungry caterpillars using elder beads and leaf art caterpillar pictures. It's always great to see how every one is different.
There was a touch of summer holidays in the air as we played on the sand tray. Lots of imaginative play and sharing, good job Twiglets.
Our own pair of Speckled Wood flew in to take part. 🦋

We had such a brilliant week in Small Wood. With the summer sun creeping in, we enjoyed being under the shade of our sweet chestnut trees and kept cool with lots of icy water play, and they absolutely loved it.

We were as busy as the bees in our theme. We discovered not only do bees give us honey but how important they are as pollinators enabling all our lovely flowers to thrive by producing seeds for next year.🌻

🌿 Brewed up endless teas in the mud kitchen and had lots of fun!

Mr and Mrs Robin have been happily sharing Small Wood with us so it was great today to share our water play with them. 😍
I always leave the water tray out after a session during hot weather, so glad I did today.

With the summer heatwave upon us the Twiglets kept cool in Small Wood under the leafy canopy. Fun in the pool, kept us cool with nature ice cubes.

We made an owl nature picture and clay owls, finishing our topic on birds.
How many can you help in your garden? Pigeon stopped by for a drink in our mini pond, so simple to make. Please put clean water out in a flat dish in the shade, pop a few pebbles in so little critters can drink too.
