"Little Explorers" - an outdo

or learning centre for 3-4 year olds. Day care 50 weeks a year. Little Explorers is based at Highway Farm Activity Centre and is run by them. We operate in an Eco friendly Timber building with a back to basics, cosy atmosphere. The building is heated by a log burner and water heated on it. We have a compost toilet and are wrapped internally with carbon zero insulation. We try to offer the best of both worlds with a secure natural indoor space, a stimulating and challenging outdoor, enclosed area for free flow. All surrounded by an acre and a half field for the freedom and exhilaration the natural outdoors has to offer. We take children from 3 years old until they start school and offer the free entitlement funding from the term after your child is 3. We base our EYFS curriculum around the outdoors and nature and are outdoors in all weathers for the majority of the day. A typical day is spent collecting the eggs from the chickens, cooking snack over the camp fire, building dens to story tell in and children initiating their own play and learning. Opportunities are presented through the outdoors in a range of purposeful contexts for children to appreciate and respect nature. Most of our resources are from natural materials found in the local environment. We plant, nurture, harvest and eat vegetables and fruit and incorporate physical opportunities into every day activities. We have also fully adopted the Healthy Early Years Program within our setting. We believe these opportunities give children flexible ways of working with and in nature to develop and learn. Trips to local environments such as the beach, woods or mining heritage add to the learning environment and appreciation of local surroundings. We support and encourage children through outdoor learning to develop their emotional confidence and self esteem. Children are also supported and encouraged to manage their own risks and to develop their life skills through using the correct tools for a purpose. For more information or an informal tour of our setting please contact the centre on 01209 211905 or 07798630481

Holiday club 17/18th August.
As it was a little damp we had some campfires. Very safe, very controlled and always water on stand by!
We cooked our own bread rolls on forks on the fire , and then tried our Dutch oven the next day to cook the left over dough. We roasted marshmallows and ate them as s’mores. We played some ten pin bowling, played hide and seek and had loads of fun and laughter . We watered the poly tunnel, explored different areas of the farm and ate fresh tomatoes and strawberries.

Holiday club 10 and 11th August .
While the heat has been later in the day we’ve had some early camp fires. We cooked toffee cinnamon popcorn, we concocted some jam jelly popcorn. We made and launched rockets . We made some delicious camp fire calzones - with fresh thyme and oregano from the farm.
We watered the poly tunnel- tried some fresh strawberries, and had to evict loads of caterpillas from there.
The caterpillars were enjoyed massively by the children . They were very very greedy.
There were jobs done, laughs and fun had !! Lovely to see returning faces as always!

Holiday club 3rd and 4th August. Lots of fun, Monday we made some paper aeroplane rockets, we decorated them carefully and launched them with compressed air. We washed our penguin and had loads of fun in the sun. Tuesday was a little bit cooler and damper so we jumped in and had a camp fire . We picked some potatoes from our poly-tunnel, then grated and sliced them and fried them. Very tasty.
We also watered the poly-tunnel and went exploring around Highway farm. Recently we discovered badgers have been digging up bee and wasp nests - in search for honey and sweet treats!!
