As we approach the first phase of Making Tax Digital (MTD), Coram PACEY is urging the Government to pause and rethink its approach before changes are introduced that risk disrupting and damaging the childminding sector.

With only a couple of weeks to go until the first childminders are affected, we are still waiting for clear guidance from HMRC on how these changes will work in practice. This lack of clarity is causing real concern for childminders who are trying to prepare their businesses and finances.

Yesterday we wrote directly to HMRC and the Government calling for the MTD rollout to be paused. Our concern is clear: childminders must not be financially disadvantaged by the removal of the blanket wear and tear allowance alongside these changes.

In our letter we shared the findings from our recent survey of 4,850 childminders across the UK, ensuring the voices and experiences of the sector are clearly heard.

We have asked HMRC to:

1. Pause the rollout of MTD for childminders, as has already happened for other self-employed groups, including foster carers.
2. Publish the data and evaluation on how these changes will affect the childminding profession.
3. Work with sector representatives to find a fairer and more workable solution.

This is an issue affecting all UK childminders and since we sent our letter to HMRC yesterday, the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA) received an response to their Freedom of Information (FOI) questions to HMRC. This confirms "There is no record of any specific assessment on the impact of implementing the Making Tax Digital policy on the childminding sector”

We want you to know that we are continuing to be a voice for the sector on this issue and challenge decisions that could harm childminders and the vital childcare and early learning you provide to families every day.

We have also been speaking directly with childminders about how these changes will affect you. You can read Georgina’s case study, where she explains what the MTD rollout and removal of the wear and tear allowance could mean for her business and for the families she supports.

We will keep pushing on this issue and keep you updated - please find the latest updates on our campaign page:

We do children a disservice when we reduce early childhood to colors, numbers, shapes, and letters. These concepts will come, but when we fixate on them too early or too narrowly, we risk turning learning into pressure, rote drills, and forced lessons that dampen curiosity. Instead of opening children up to the joy of discovery, this approach can make learning feel like a performance or a checklist to get through.

What often gets overlooked are the skills that matter most for long-term cognition: problem-solving, persistence, self-regulation, creativity, language, and the ability to connect ideas across experiences. These are the foundations that make colors, numbers, shapes, and letters meaningful later on. When early childhood is reduced to surface-level academics, we rob children of the chance to build the deeper capacities that allow true learning to stick.

Early childhood is about so much more. It is about building the brain through play, strengthening the body through movement, wiring for empathy and regulation through relationships, and developing a love of learning that lasts far beyond preschool. When we allow concepts like numbers, letters, shapes, and colors to be discovered in meaningful, everyday contexts, children connect with them naturally and deeply.
