📢 Important Update for Families: The Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 📢

As a community tutoring group, we want to make sure our local families stay informed about the big updates happening in education. The government has officially passed the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026, bringing in some positive changes to help ease family costs and support children’s learning.

We know big announcements can feel overwhelming, but please remember: these changes are being rolled out slowly to support families, not to catch anyone out.

Here is a worry-free, complete breakdown of what this means for you and your children, including home education, SEND, and where to get extra support.

Helping with Family Costs Free Breakfast Clubs: Every state-funded primary school will offer a free breakfast club before school starts, helping children start the day ready to learn.

Cheaper School Uniforms: New strict caps are coming in to limit the number of expensive, branded uniform items schools can require.

Free School Meals Extension: More children will now qualify, as eligibility is expanding to include all families receiving Universal Credit.

Boosting Standards in All SchoolsQualified Teachers: To ensure high-quality learning, all new teachers in state-funded schools (including academies) must hold or be working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Clearer Rules on Phones & Health: Rules keeping school days mobile phone-free are now official. Schools must also publish clear, accessible allergy safety policies on their websites.

🏡 What to Know About Home EducationThe government has legislated a few important shifts regarding Elective Home Education, but the core right to home educate remains fully protected.

Children Not in School (CNIS) Register: Local authorities will now keep a register of children who are not enrolled in a registered school to better support families.

Mandatory Meetings: Before a child can be officially withdrawn from a state school to be home-educated, schools and councils will follow a multi-step process, including a meeting to discuss support.

Timeline: Detailed guidance and secondary legislation are expected to be rolled out later in 2026, so you do not need to register today.

🧩 What is Happening with EHCPs?

Alongside the Act, the government has published significant proposals for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) reform.

New Support Plans: The government plans to introduce digital Individual Support Plans (ISPs) to provide earlier specialist support in mainstream schools.

EHCPs Will Remain: EHCPs are not being scrapped. They will continue to exist for children with the most severe and complex needs.

Timeline: These are major reforms. The government has stated that no changes to existing EHCPs will begin before 2030, and any transitions will happen gradually as children move between school phases.

🗓️ When is this happening?

The Act has officially passed into law, but the changes will be introduced in stages rather than all at once:

Many of the uniform cost caps and allergy policy requirements are expected to roll out for upcoming school terms.

The free breakfast clubs and Universal Credit meal expansions will be phased in over the coming months to give schools time to prepare.

For General School & Cost Advice: Contact (for families with disabled children) provides an excellent helpline, while Citizens Advice can help you look into broader cost-of-living support.

🌿 The last week of term is here 🌿

For some children, school has been an amazing experience this year - full of friendships, achievements, confidence and happy memories.

For others, it may have been much harder. School can bring pressure, worries, friendship challenges, tiredness, or feelings that children don’t always have the words to explain.

As we head into the summer holidays, it’s worth remembering that children often need something we all need after a busy period: time to reset.

A few gentle reminders for the holidays:

☀️ Let them rest. After months of routines, expectations and early mornings, downtime really matters.

🌳 Get outside where you can. Fresh air, movement, exploring, walking, playing, gardening, or simply being outdoors can make a real difference to how we feel.

🎨 Make space for the things they enjoy. Whether that’s reading, sport, baking, drawing, building, gaming, music, seeing friends, or something completely different — enjoyment and curiosity matter.

📱 Be mindful of screen time. Screens can be a brilliant way to relax, connect and switch off, and many children genuinely enjoy them. It can just be helpful to gently keep an eye on balance - making sure there is also time for sleep, movement, conversations and other interests.

😴 Prioritise sleep. A calmer routine over the summer can help children recharge ready for the year ahead.

And a reminder: you know your child best. Every child is different, and every family has its own routines and challenges. The aim isn’t a “perfect” summer - it’s a summer where children feel safe, rested and valued.

💛 If the holidays feel difficult, support is available.

For families in Tandridge and the surrounding areas:

🌿 MindWorks Surrey offers emotional wellbeing and mental health support for children and young people across Surrey.

💬 CYP Havens provide safe, welcoming spaces where young people can talk through worries with trained staff.

🤝 Local youth activities can also be a great way for children and young people to connect, build confidence and try something new. Organisations such as YMCA East Surrey, Street Talk, and Youth Unite (supporting young people with SEND) offer opportunities in the wider area.

🏃 The Friday Night Project at Tandridge Leisure Centre provides a weekly youth club with sports and activities for young people aged 11–16.

There are also national organisations such as YoungMinds, which offers advice and support for parents and carers who are worried about their child’s mental health.

Whether your child has had the best school year ever or one they’re glad to see the back of, I hope the summer gives them the chance to slow down, breathe, have fun and simply be themselves. 💛

We have been working quietly behind the scenes on something incredibly close to our hearts, and we are finally ready to share it with you:

We are officially working towards launching an alternative therapeutic specialist SEND provision right here in Surrey! 🎉

Operating as a Community Interest Company (CIC), our mission is vital: helping neurodivergent and vulnerable young people rebuild their school confidence, master emotional co-regulation, and bridge back into education.

Between our combined backgrounds as a QTS Education Lead with a Masters in SEND and a Certified Therapeutic Lead, we have the passion and the qualifications ready to go. But to help us get this off the ground and navigate the final steps toward our launch, we need your help!

To ensure we build a flawless foundation, we are looking for a few brilliant, objective minds to join our independent Advisory Board. You’ll act as our "critical friends" during this development phase and beyond - guiding our strategy, protecting our community mission, and ensuring our governance is bulletproof.

We are looking for professionals with a passion for SEND education who have expertise in:

💼 Finance & Commercial Strategy (helping us plan sustainable growth as a CIC)
⚖️ HR & Regulatory Compliance (ensuring our policies and staff frameworks are set up correctly)
🍎 Education / SEND Leadership (working alongside us to review our educational impact)

What is the commitment?

We know your time is precious, so we’ve kept this highly manageable. This is a voluntary role requiring just 2 to 3 meetings per year, totalling roughly 6 to 10 hours across the whole academic year (can be virtual to fit your schedule).

Reflecting on our first academic year at Future Routes CIC 🌿

As we reach the end of our first academic year, we've found ourselves reflecting on just how much can happen when education is built around community, relationships and belonging.

When we founded Future Routes CIC, our vision was simple: to create a space where young people could access high-quality educational support while feeling understood, encouraged and confident enough to thrive.

Over the past year, we've welcomed an increasing number of students into our Wednesday evening sessions. Whilst we're incredibly proud of the academic progress our students have made, what has stood out most has been the impact beyond grades.

We've watched confidence grow.

We've seen young people begin to enjoy learning again.

We've seen friendships form.

We've supported families through periods of uncertainty and celebrated successes together.

Our recent parent reviews have been a real reminder of why we started this journey. Knowing that families feel supported, listened to and part of a wider learning community means more to us than we can put into words.

We're also incredibly grateful to BletchFest and Grange Meadow, whose generous donations have helped us invest in resources and equipment that better meet the needs of the young people we support, including those with SEND. Their support has helped strengthen our provision and move us closer to the inclusive environment we want every student to experience.

As we head into the summer, we'll be reflecting on our offer, listening to our families and thinking carefully about how Future Routes can continue to grow in the heart of our community.

Our ambition has never simply been to provide tuition.

It's to build a place where education is accessible, relationships matter, and every young person feels they belong.

Because sometimes, helping a student reach their potential isn't about changing the child.

It's about creating an environment where they can flourish.
