It’s building confidence.

It’s believing in potential before others see it.

Our school is proud to celebrate the fantastic achievement of our Active Travel Ambassadors, who recently took part in an exciting inter-school competition and won!

The team competed against four other schools, presenting their ideas to a panel of experts on how to encourage more students and families to travel actively to school. Their campaign focused on promoting healthier, more sustainable ways of travelling, such as walking, cycling, or scootering, helping reduce traffic around school and improve wellbeing.

The judges were incredibly impressed with the ambassadors’ confidence, creativity, and passion. Their thoughtful presentation clearly demonstrated not only the importance of active travel, but also practical and engaging ways to inspire others to get involved.

As a result of their outstanding effort, the team secured first place, winning £200 to support their campaign, which will soon be launched in school. We are all looking forward to seeing their ideas brought to life and making a real difference across our school community.

A huge congratulations to our brilliant ambassadors who have represented the school superbly and should be extremely proud of their achievement. Well done!

For many people, teaching is about finding a role that finally brings together the things they already care about.

In our latest blog, 'Finding My Place in Secondary Teaching', one trainee teacher shares how a background in Digital Music and time spent coaching young people led him to secondary teaching. What started as two separate interests, subject passion and working with young people, came together in the classroom.

Secondary teaching offers that balance. You get to deepen your subject knowledge, teach something you genuinely enjoy, and make a real impact on students every day. For graduates or career changers who haven’t followed a straight path, teaching can be a way to connect your skills, experiences and interests into one meaningful career.

Year 9 students visited Canada Hall to explore Merstham’s experiences during both World War I and World War II. Through engaging discussions about wartime life and the impact of World War II air raids, students gained a deeper understanding of how global conflict shaped the local community, helping them appreciate Merstham’s place within wider historical events.

Get into Teaching

Katie grew up rarely seeing herself in the books she studied. At university, she finally found the diverse voices she’d been missing, and now, as a secondary English teacher, she’s making sure her students do too. Find out more about Katie’s journey https://www.glftt.org/1833/scitt-blog-mar-26
