Difficulties with phonological memory are a core feature of dyslexia, yet many parents have never heard the term before their child is assessed.

It refers to the ability to hold speech sounds in mind for a few seconds—something that underpins reading, spelling and learning new words.

Understanding why a child struggles can often be the first step towards supporting them effectively.

Have you ever heard people say that a child is "too young" for a dyslexia assessment?

It's one of the most common misconceptions I come across. Every child is different, and the key question isn't age alone but whether a meaningful literacy profile has emerged.

Applying for DSA: A Clear Guide for Parents 01/06/2026

Applying for DSA can feel daunting — but you don’t have to navigate it alone. This clear, step‑by‑step guide explains who can apply, what evidence you need, how the needs assessment works and the types of support DSA can fund (assistive software, note‑taking support, assessment‑recommended equipment and more).

I recommend starting early: gather diagnostic reports, book a specialist assessment that meets DSA requirements, and keep copies of all correspondence. If you’re in Berkshire or Oxfordshire (or need an online option), I offer assessments and follow‑up support tailored to your child’s needs.

Important read on how girls with dyslexia and dyscalculia are still too often overlooked or misidentified in schools.

Recognition and support shouldn’t depend on gender. 💙

What if we looked at dyslexia differently?

Instead of focusing on weaknesses, this test explores strengths—and it might change the way you see yourself or someone you know.

Have a go 👇

At Made By Dyslexia, we know that lots of neurodiversities can co-exist and many are unidentified.

For instance, 1 in 5 people are dyslexic (making it the largest neurodiversity)

But 80% of dyslexics leave school unidentified.

When you think differently, the most important thing you can do is to understand your strengths and challenges - and really lean in to your strengths to thrive. Because, as Jamie says, "there are different types of intelligence and everyone has the ability to be brilliant"

We welcome the publication of the Government’s response to the consultation into post-16 level 3 and below pathways, and the announcement of nearly £800m of extra funding for post-16 education. Exciting reforms ahead with new V (vocational) Levels joining A Levels and T Levels to broaden pathways for all learners. These changes will offer more choice and opportunities to young people, including those with dyslexia.
