πŸŽ“ What Makes Learning Truly Memorable?

A good lesson can give someone knowledge.
A great learning experience can change how someone sees themselves.

As a senior lecturer and corporate trainer, I have learned that people don’t always remember everything we teach.

* But they often remember how we made them feel while learning.

* They remember the lecturer who believed they could do it.

* The trainer who made a difficult subject feel achievable.

* The person who listened when they were struggling.

The learning experience that gave them the confidence to say:

β€œMaybe I can do this after all.”

For me, this is where teaching and training become much more than delivering content.

Whether we are working with university students, mature learners, academics, managers or corporate teams, the principles are remarkably similar.

People learn better when they feel:

πŸ’‘ Valued
🌱 Supported
🎯 Challenged
✨ Inspired
πŸš€ Confident

And this is something I believe every educator and trainer should ask themselves:

β€œWhen my session ends, what will people take away with them, beyond the knowledge?”

Perhaps it is a new skill.

Perhaps a different perspective.

Perhaps the confidence to take action.

Or perhaps simply the belief that they are capable of more than they thought.

That, for me, is the real impact of teaching.

We don’t just teach people what to know.
We help shape what they believe they can become. 🌱

πŸ’¬ What is one teacher, trainer or learning experience that made a lasting difference to you?

I’d genuinely love to hear your story.

πŸ”„ If this resonates with you, share it with an educator, trainer or learner who has made a difference in your life.

πŸŽ“ One Question I often think about as an Educator:

Are we teaching students how to sell their degree or how to sell themselves?

When teaching mature students completing their degrees, I often see something that deserves more recognition.

A younger graduate may have a strong academic record, but limited workplace experience.

A mature student may sometimes look at their CV and think:

β€œI don't have the right management experience.” But they may actually have years of transferable experience.

They may have:
πŸ’Ό Managed people, customers or projects
🀝 Dealt with difficult situations and different personalities
⏰ Balanced work, family and study commitments
🧠 Solved real workplace problems
πŸ“Š Made decisions under pressure
πŸ’¬ Communicated with colleagues, customers and managers
πŸ”„ Adapted to change and learned from setbacks

* The difference isn't necessarily who has more potential.
* It is often about who can articulate their experience effectively.

This is where educators can make a real difference.

Instead of simply telling mature students:
β€œYou need management experience.”

We can help them recognise:
β€œYou already have transferable management skills, now let's learn how to evidence and communicate them.”

And for younger students, the challenge is different.

They may need opportunities to build those experiences through internships, volunteering, projects, societies, part-time work, simulations and employer engagement.

So perhaps our role as educators is not to prepare every student in exactly the same way.

It is to help each student understand:

- What have I already learned?
- What can I do?
- What evidence can I provide?
- And how does this create value for an employer?

Because a degree should not simply give students a qualification.
It should help them understand the value of their own story.

πŸ’¬ For educators and employers:

- What transferable skill do you think mature students often underestimate?
- And what skill should younger graduates start developing before they enter management?

I'd love to hear your perspective.
