So what do you reckon to this article FB? Flies in the face of common dogma that ‘local is best.’ For me the carbon footprint isn’t the only consideration - we need to connect people with where their food comes from and promote quality (meaning good welfare, nutritious, excellent flavour, environmentally sound production methods) and support our own farming community. Give me grass finished UK beef and lamb over an imported chicken from the US any day, no matter what difference it makes to my C footprint.

Lovely figure from Scarborough et al https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.1003025 demonstrating that the soft drinks industry levy (=sugar tax) on soft drinks had had a considerable impact on the content of sugar in soft drinks. Good response from the manufacturers. We will have to wait for sales data to understand the impact on the amount of sugar actually being consumed via soft drinks and to understand the extent to which the tax has shifted consumers’ purchasing habits.
