We have one of the UK's largest Fair Trade Shops in the form of The World Shop, and a new zero-waste shop - Global Refills.
RISC is Reading's Development Education Centre, working with schools, community organisations and the general public, raising the profile of international issues and promoting action for sustainable development, equality and social justice. Our meeting rooms are available for bookings. The Global Cafe is temporarily closed due to covid.

Available at the World Shop, a variety of Djembe drums. The is a traditional hand drum from West Africa, recognized by its distinctive goblet shape and rope-tuned design. It is played with bare hands and is known for its loud, powerful sound and wide range of tones. According to the Bambara people of Mali, the name djembe comes from the phrase “Anke djé, anke bé”, which means “everyone gather together in peace.” This reflects the drum’s important role in bringing communities together for celebrations, storytelling, ceremonies, and other social events.
