Dr Sean Elias from the Culham Innovation Centre spent the afternoon with our year 10 and year 12 biologists delivering a workshop on the development of vaccines.
Students received an informative outline of how the immune system works with real life case studies as examples of the issues involved.
Students were then presented with choosing a pathogen and developing a vaccine for it. Along the way, students had to consider which scientific techniques to use, cost factors, time factors, uptake, demand for and social reactions.

Targeted Year 9 students took part in a fantastic pilot project called ExperienceX last week.
Huge local employer , including Little Heath alumni, Ben and Evan, came into school for a morning and delivered a very engaging, fast paced, interactive workshop based on employability skills.
Students were put into teams and took part in a number of activities to help develop soft skills such as communication, team work, problem solving. They were also challenged with the task of constructing a catapult on a budget.
The following day students spent the day at the AWE head office and constructed the catapult, tested it and were scored against a number of set criteria. Each group was supported by an AWE apprentice.
Students learnt about AWE, the huge amount of job roles they offer, the application process and heard about the career paths of eight different professionals who work there. AWE put an incredible amount of work and support into our two days, a huge thank you to them!
Thank you also to our wonderful Year 9s who were a credit to themselves and the school.

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who achieved a Gold, Silver or Bronze award in the International Biology Olympiad Competition recently ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
Over 42,000 students took part internationally. The top 5% are awarded Gold, the next 15% silver and then Bronze. The competition consists of two, twenty-five-minute multiple choice papers to be taken online under staff supervised exam conditions.
Questions are set on the school curriculum, but the competition also rewards those students whose knowledge of the subject has been increased by reading books and magazines, watching natural history programmes, taking notice of the news media for items of biological interest, and are generally aware of our natural flora and fauna. The competitions are intended to support enrichment of the biology curriculum in schools and colleges. ๐ฑ๐ซ๐ธ
Well done to these students who achieved a fantastic result! ๐

Today, all year 8 students took part in a cross-curriculum day looking at the legacies of the Second World War. It has been 81 years since the end of the War, and the aim of the day was to enable students to consider the relevance and importance of the legacies of the war still today.
Students spent the day in sessions with English, RE, History and Citizenship teachers learning about how different aspects of the legacies of the Second World War connect to the different subject areas.
Year 8 engaged well with the sessions and had some fabulous, thoughtful reflections on the importance of the Second World War, and what we can and should know about it today.
Following todays sessions, the students are invited to enter a House Competition to create something to demonstrate what they have learned from today - this could be a poster, a written article, a video - they can be as creative as they like! Entries to Mrs Canning or their History teacher by Friday 3 July.
